标题: LZM E11-85
After gradual declension down to about 39 hours to 1970, the workweek in the United States has steadily increased in the point that the average worker now  puts in  an estimated 164 extra hours of paid labor a year.

(D) After gradually declining
(E) Following gradually declining

Ans: D

请问AFTER 和 FOLLOWING在这里的区别,它们在用法上有何不同,谢谢!

Why E? You got to know what the choices mean first.

1. With "following", it means that "workweek" follows "declining". "Declining" happens before "workweek". It is just not what the sentence intends.

2. It emphasizes on the action "following". That is not the intent either.

3. "Following the declining" can not be right. "Following its gradual decrease to ..." would be good to me.

So what you should know to work SC is: get the meaning and intent of the sentence; find the simple and clean choice.
