敬請討論指正。
第一爭議題：選(but instead) 或(; rather)?

『XXX is not that of sth. ...... ( ) that of sth. 糾結於 (but instead) 和 (; rather)，最後選了rather, 不知對不對?』。
留言的同學都選(; rather)。我們代入原貼文來看看，
第一可能：XXX is not that of sth. ...... ( but instead ) that of sth.
第二可能：XXX is not that of sth. ...... ( ; rather ) that of sth.

推測：按(; rather)的用法，後面必須接一個主謂賓(S+V+O)的子句，不可接that of sth.成為(; rather that of sth.)
故推測應該是第一可能性較大。例如 In the restaurant, I ordered some food, but the waiter brought me not that I ordered but instead that others ordered.

不是。highlight 部分是考點，是需要專注的部分，意思即為其他字眼與解題比較無關可以略過。
由於同學貼文幾乎都是片段，因此我把歷年來最可能的真題收集表列，提供大家參考。由於同學貼文沒有完整原文，按GMAT歷年真題，(but instead)、(; rather)  都有機會是答案。
不過，意思有差別：前者是「取代]，後者是「選取、寧可是」

同學應理解"X rather than Y" 是從X and Y 裡取了X，意思是XY兩者並存，但選取X，不是用X取代Y。not X, but instead Y 是用Y取代X，意思是只剩Y，沒有X了（請注意：but instead 和 but rather 歷屆真考都是搭配  not ..., but instead / but rather的句型，而 instead of, rather than, 都沒搭配not。)
下面這題漏打答案：（每題答案都在選項後面標記 x）
Reptiles, by drawing their body heat directly from the Sun {rather than burning calories} to generate it, can survive on ten percent of the nourishment that a mammal of similar size would normally require
(A)       rather than burning calories to generate it  x
(B)       rather than the generation of body heat by burning calories
(C)       and not from generating it by burning calories
(D)       instead of by burning calories for generating it
(E)       instead of body heat generated by burning calories

此題為爭議題。
答案為A。說明：不是用body heat directly from the Sun 取代 body heat generated by burning calories
而是兩種產生body heat 的方法，爬蟲類取了drawing their body heat directly from the Sun這方法。

有些题目没有答案，不知道是不是我没有找到，lz能不能再把答案丰富一下呀。。因为我语法部分不太好，没有答案来修正的话可能正确率很低。。如果可以的话感激不尽！
