I was accepted to Emory, as myusername would suggest, but I am very interested in the JHU program. Thistalk about rankings is silly. MSU Broad and SMU broke into the top 25 this yearso make no mistake about it, there is room for new comers in the top 25.Vanderbilt and Georgetown would agree. As forJHU v. GTown in the BoWash demo, I wouldn't worry. NYU and Columbia aren'tlamenting the competition in NY. To put MD and GW on the same level as JHU andGTown is a stretch. While, yes, their MBA programs are mature, they are not inthe same league in terms of prestige. JHU is one of the most prestigious univerisities in theworld, period, end of story. World class universities don't tolerate mediocrityand JHU's Carey MBA will be world class. That being said, I would have to think long and hard about turning down a UNC,GTown or (in my case) Emory admit for the gamble. Plain and simple, the alumnibase is scant and all new things have bugs to fix. You will have access to any job opportunities youwant from JHU, but not the alumni to hold the door for you as you walk in. Whatis one of the main advantages of a top 25 MBA? That alumni holding the door foryou as you walk in. So, weigh that. Ultimately,if you are struggling to gain acceptance to a top 25 program (stalwarts, notthe "oh, would you look at that, MSU and SMU are top schools thisyear"), JHU is a phenomenal opportunity you may never have again (at leastnot until CalTech or Brown develop an MBA). You have the chance to be part ofsomething big, something new, something special that you may not ordinarliyget. Carpe Diem, my friends!
正像Emory Note(被Emory 录取)的仁兄所说:“ JHU is one of the most prestigious universities inthe world, period, end of story. World class universities don't toleratemediocrity and JHU’s Carey MBA will be world class. 还有就是如果大家希望在美国有些工作实习经验的话, 觉得在选择学校的时候要考虑地理位置。 纽约有Columbia和NYU两强竞争. 而DC这座美国首府就是JHU 和Georgetown 的竞争了。 在一个好的location意味着更多的职场人脉和更大的工作机会, 对于MBA 来说这是非常重要的。 Emory Note也觉得:You will have access to any job opportunities you wantfrom JHU, but not the alumni to hold the door for you as you walk in. What isone of the main advantages of a top 25 MBA? That alumni holding the door foryou as you walk in. So, weigh that. l 以下是位GMBA的在读学生的心得: Re: Johns Hopkins Carey Business School [#permalink] 21 Feb 2012, 14:16This post received KUDOS I believe I may be one of the mythical JHUfull-time MBAs you are discussing and I'll be glad to weigh in! Firstoff, this is a worthwhile discussion. Choosing to go to a "startup"b-school is a big decision. The best I can do is offer my perspective and explainthe logic I used when deciding to come to Carey. I'll try to address only thethemes that you all brought up directly. 是一位在读的GMAB学生, 很好的职业背景。
My background: Igrew up in Africa, went to a Virginia state school to study Computer Science, joined a software company that was recently acquired by Oracle, and startedanother company that raised some money but then failed in the economicdownturn.
Accreditation: In my mind, this didn't matter at all. As many of you have mentioned, Johns Hopkins is aworld-renowned institution of higher learning. They are not going to graduateincapable full-time MBAs. I have had employers ask me about accreditation, butthe question always more of a "why did you choose to go to a school withno track record" question.
Alumni base:We've graduated thousands of part-time MBAs for many years. While our alumnibase may be more localized than some, it is active and passionate about the newprogram. At the end of theday, even an alum won't just hand new graduates jobs. They may help get aninterview, but after that, you're on your own.
Name recognition: JHU is considered one of themost recognized educational brands worldwide. Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Berkeley,Columbia, and Yale are other names that carry similar heft. Ask peoplein Europe or Asia outside the MBA bubble about Northwestern, Chicago, UPenn(let alone the words Kellogg, Booth, or Wharton) and you might be left withsome courteous nods. However, if you want admission to the "MBAworld" of jobs, you may want to go to one of those schools. I was willingto take my chances with Johns Hopkins on my resume. Similarly, the number ofAmerican hirers who have heard of any European b-schools besides Oxford andCambridge is small.
Track record for recruiting: The only stats I know come fromthe inaugural class' internships last summer. We had a 99% internship placementrate (of all students, not just those who reported). Some of the companies weworked for include Accenture, Acumen Fund,Amazon, Apple, Disney, Goldman,IBM, J&J, Kiva, Microsoft, Siemens, UBS, the US State Department, and theUnited Nations.
Finance placement: Some companies I know thatclassmates received offers from include: Deutche Bank, Citigroup, Barclays, BNYMellon, Brown Advisory, Stifel Nicolaus, UBS, and in the non-profit space,Grameen, Kiva, and Ashoka. I worked as a Senior FA last summer in InvestorRelations for Agilent Technologies (NYSE: A)
Ranking: Right now,we're not concerning ourselves with rankings. We have incredible students, brilliant faculty, and cooljobs. Rankings will come with accreditation and time.
Regional Perception: GW, UMD, and Georgetown are allgreat schools. However, I wanted a top-tier name on my resume that would get meinto the interview rooms at the most selective companies in the US (like Googleand Amazon). Georgetown, UMD, and GWUhaven't placed anyone at either company in the past year. We have and I believethat speaks to the quality of both our brand and our students.
Summary At the end of the day, what matters most is what you want out of anMBA. Do you follow the status quo, or are you willing to walk the road lesstraveled? Are you willing to challenge yourself in the company of world-classfaculty in a small-school environment? Do you want a mandatory abroad componentthat is more involved than the week-long "field-trip" common at mostb-schools? Do you want to work on commercializing a discovery from JHU's immensebody of research?
It's not for everyone, but it was for me. _________________
2 cents Current student here. Your question is very opened ended... Will Hopkins Carey lead to"a good job"? As long as you put yourself out there, of course it will. In what industry are you working? Are you looking to stay there, or to change careers? What is your ideal position upon graduation? Are you looking for a full time or part time program? I think those types of questions should drive your decisions about B-school. My experience so far (half way through and coming from an ivy league background) has left me very impressed by the program. The students and faculty are dedicated to the school's unique mission and committed to seeing it succeed, and to have that success mirrored in the rankings. Hopkins U ranks just outside of the 10 globally, and higher than many Ivy league schools. In the years to come, I think we can expect the Carey school to rise accordingly.
Re AACSB accreditation, it has honestly never come up with any of the employers with whom I've interacted, and it's not a preoccupation of the students, nor the faculty. The reality is that you need a full time program to get AACSB accred and the first cohorts of that newly created program have just started getting out into the workforce. So, the school is in that process. I do work in healthcare and needed a part-time program, but I also chose Hopkins Carey over a number of other AACSB accredited schools - Georgetown and Cornell, to be specific - and I think AACSB should be the last reason to choose a different program. Hopkins has opened doors for me in the healthcare field that I'm convinced an MBA from a place like NYU or Columbia simply wouldn't have. But with all things MBA, it's just a foot in the door, and there are many more students at Harvard who want to work for Google or McKinsey than there are offers made to those students. That is to say, reputation and your network isn't a golden ticket to anything. 源自于The Baltimore Sun http://talk.baltimoresun.com/showthread.php?t=323061 |
