Communication is one of the reasons, but I think Chinese students use it as an excuse. Small talk helps, but it will not land you the job. I feel the main differences between Westerner and Chinese are: 1) confidence, 2) networking.
1) Confidence – Most companies hire MBAs to lead, not to be a work monkey. Confidence helps project leadership a bit better. This comes through during the interview process. You need to take ownership of the line items on your resume. Use “I” instead of “we” on questions. Practice the stories, so you don’t stumble.
2) Networking – This is where the small talk helps to a certain extent. However, networking starts months before your interview. You need to connect with alumni, past interns, HR, etc. before your interview, so that they are pulling for you to get an offer. If you have senior managers pulling for you, it is very difficult for the HR or your 1st round interviewers (most likely junior staff) to overrule that. |
