现在分词的用法

对于现在分词的用法已经完全蒙圈了，知道ving在句尾做伴随的用法，反倒对现在分词放句首的用法感到疑惑了Applying a new method for analyzing the chemistry of tooth enamel, scientists have examined molars of prehuman ancestors and determined that their diets were more varied than had been supposed.
这个是正确答案，Applyings是做什么成分啊 T T也不能伴随
然后这道题我选的是

Applying就是修饰主语啊，have examined and determined 就是 applying的结果。

这里C我也说不好，你可以去搜一下Manhattan上有Ron的解释，不过也属于相对subtle的讲法

如果我来选的话，第一因为C里面they和their指代的人不一致 （但不是一个从句，我不确定是不是一定不可以，但我觉得有问题），第二E选项相对更好 （applying 比 when更好的说明后面的是结果，examined和determined也平行的关系，另外这里用现在完成时肯定也比用过去时好）主要还是综合的考虑吧。
