本题中的research是动词，to research是本题的目的状语。且research在本题中是及物动词，身后直接加宾语即可，不用再加介词短语（只有不及物动词才需要加介词短语来构成及物动词短语）。

a professor has taken a sabbatical (大学老师的公休假) to research, 这里research做动词表示教授休假的目的，可知本题考了research 做动词(相当于study) 的用法：按照OG的官方解析，research应该直接跟宾语，不需要加介词，马上选E；但如果考试中不知道这个用法，就从选项的其他区别入手：A的表达太过啰嗦，research即便按照不及物动词可以接介词，也是接in/into/on，不能接about，还是用词错误；C是省略结构，while后面省略了主句的主语和be动词，补全是while the professor was in France, 语义错误，排除; D选项while he中的he指代的是主句主语a professor,语义也错误，排除。

谢谢，但是什么时候research是机务动词，什么时候是不及物动词呢，谢谢啦

如果按这样分析 E选项的while he lived in France 中的he好像也可以理解成professor~~还是有点晕，

同问这道题。但我记得有看过别的题目中出现 Research....on/in smth, 这个会不会是research作为名词的时候后面就可以加介词？ 比如说 do research on something

查了下词典research的用法：

做为名词：+on/into something
作为动词:
1. 及物动词时+ something；e.g. He has worked, taught and researched in this field for several years.
2. 不及物动词时候+ in / how/ what  e.g.  Environmental economists research how environmental goods and services may be provided more efficiently by putting a price on them.

装渣渣

在research用作动词，更多时候是表现为及物动词，直接加名词；但在少数情况下，具体到某个细分领域时，会加on/into.
#牛津词典#上，给出的例句基本都是及物动词的用法：
The amount of time and money being spent on researching this disease is pitiful.
We are researching the reproduction of elephants.
She researched a wide variety of jobs before deciding on law.
He researches heart disease.
The internet has reduced the amount of time it takes to research these subjects.
唯一一句不及物动词的例句：
She's researching into possible cures for AIDS.

此外，一般来说research作名词的时候会用介词的情况比较多，比如 do research on/into sth
