Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: The most important problems in today's world will be solved in our lifetime.
We always hope that the most important problems in contemporary society be solved as soon as possible. But I think these problems can hardly be solved in our lifetime.
To begin with, the war is one of the most important problems that affects nowadays society, and war is disliked by us people. Though disliked by people, war breaks out now and then in the world, which is strange enough. The Second World War was thought to be the end of all wars, but it turns out that after the Second World War, wars in small scale, say conflict or confrontation, still happen till now. The reason, I think, lies in the selfishness of human beings. Some powerful countries intrude other countries in the hope of getting the resources they need, like timber, ore, petrol or gasoline. And as I has mentioned, because humans are always selfish, I think wars will continue in the future.
Diseases are another kind of important problems that we must face with since we human started to exist in the world. Admittedly, in the past centuries, especially in recent years, we have made huge progress in medical treatment. We now live longer than we did in the past. The WHO announces that we now live on an average of 75 years. Yet situation varies between countries. People in developed countries live longer than those in developing or undeveloped countries. Also, now there still exist some deceases that are beyond our ability to cure, like AIDS and certain kind of cancers, to cure which requires the efforts of long term research, and hence are unlikely to be solved within our lifetime.
Last but not least, pollution is yet another kind of important problems. We have seen great progress in our economy, which is achieved at the cost of the fragile environment. We all long for a better and comfortable environment to live in, so we set up international organisation to regulate the behavior of the potential polluting factories. And international cooperation is called for to settle the issue. Unfortunately, the effect seems too small, since not every countries are willing to close the factories or enterprises which, polluting as they are, earn them profits.
In conclusion, based on the above reasons, i.e., the selfishness of mankind, the contemporary restriction in treating certain kind of deceases, the unwillingness to suspend the polluting enterprise so as to improve the environment, problems like war, fatal deceases and pollution will continue to affect us as well as our children.(418 words) |
