[注意]圣约翰St. John's商学院

Attention, Guys!

This post is open for questions now. The admissions coordinator is back.

Few Tips on Interview for the Scholarship:

1. Be prepared and confident

2. Develop your own passion (your interest, your value, your life goal, not just your career goal)

3. Open your mind to the world (read about the world, not just your textbook)

4. Polish your English (this cannot be achieved in a day or two)

Interview appointment will be notified through email. Please check your emails carefully.

Risk Management Program at St. John’s
     University

Your Gateway to the Financial Industry

Hello, Everyone:

Succeeding Doralynne, I will be the new GA working with the Admissions Office of Risk Management program at St. John’s
    University
. If you have any questions regarding the program and/or the application, please feel free to use the forum mailbox or simply reply to this post to reach me. You can write in either Chinese or English. In addition, as usual, you can contact Rebekah Hanousek-Monge, the Assistant Dean and Co-Director of Graduate Recruitment, in English only, either via phone at 212-284-7017 or via Email at
hanouser@stjohns.edu. We also launched a new AOL instant messenger account so that you can chat with our admission advisor directly. Here is the instruction on how you can use this function:

http://www.stjohns.edu/academics/graduate/tobin/srm/im_chat.stj.

In this post, I am going to give you more insights of St. John’s University Risk Management program from my own experience as a Risk Management student.

The Program:

The School of Risk Management, formerly known as College of Insurance, is now a division of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business of St. John’s
    University
. The school is conveniently located in Manhattan downtown financial district, close to the Wall Street. The school offers two graduate degree programs: MS in Management of Risk and MBA with specialization in Risk/Insurance. While MS program equips students with specific techniques and knowledge of analyzing and evaluating risks, MBA is intended to provide broad business knowledge and prepares students for cross-functional decision making within an organization.

More details about MS program please click here:

http://www.stjohns.edu/academics/graduate/tobin/srm/programs/ms

For MBA program please click here:

http://www.stjohns.edu/academics/graduate/tobin/srm/programs/mba.stj

Ideal Applicants:

For MS program:

If you apply straight from the completion of an undergraduate program, I would recommend that you have a solid quantitative background. The program uses a lot of quantitative analysis tools, especially statistics and econometrics. Familiarity with certain computer language such as VB or software such as SAS is also helpful. The program is ideal for someone who wants to start a career as a risk analyst or data analyst in the insurance or risk consulting industry. The program is also ideal for someone who sets actuary as their professional goal and wants to pass one or two actuarial exams upon graduation.

For MBA program:

The recommendation is that you have a few years of full-time work experience prior your application. You see a functional role of managing risks or providing consultation on corporate risk management policy as your career goal. Good English communication skill is highly recommended, but the school has excellent ESL program to help you get ready for your degree.

Application, Tuition and Financial Aid:

To start an application, please click here:

http://www.stjohns.edu/academics/graduate/tobin/prospective/apply_online.stj

Online application is recommended for the Risk Management programs in order to get a timely review on your application.

Tuition and Fee:

The current tuition for Risk Management degrees is $880 per credit. General fee is $150 per semester. Insurance fee is $846 per semester. If you plan to live on-campus, the room and board expense is approximately $5,000 per semester.

Financial Aid:

The Zurich Chinese Scholars Fund provides full coverage of costs associated with three Chinese students attending the one-year MS program. This fund starts in 2008 and ends in 2010. Therefore, students interested in the Risk Management program are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Each year, MS and MBA Risk Management programs also grant two merit-based graduate assistantships respectively. These assistantships give full-tuition coverage and a monthly stipend.

The annual AXA 911 Scholarship grants four risk management students with awards from $7,000 to $10,000.

Each year, the School of Risk Management receives new funds from various sources and these grants can range from $2,000 to $10,000. Please contact the admissions for details of these awards.

Placement:

The career office of the School of Risk Management is located on the fourth floor of the Manhattan Campus building. My suggestion is that you keep a close contact with the career counselor for your career plan. The career office has all sorts of information about internship and full-time positions in the insurance or the financial industry. It also holds two big on-campus career fairs in each spring and fall respectively. Given the current economic situation, the earlier you start talking with the career counselor and the more frequent you seek advice from them, the more likely you will succeed in securing a job offer upon your graduation. For international students, it also helps if you look globally for job opportunities.

PLEASE notice that the Peter J. Tobin College of Business offers various degree programs in Accounting, Taxation, Decision Science, Finance, Marketing, etc. to meet your educational needs for different career path. We encourage you to go to our website for a detailed description of these programs. For an overview of various graduate programs, please click here:

http://www.stjohns.edu/academics/graduate/tobin/academics/overview.stj

Please follow the link on the webpages for more information regarding specific program and/or its application process. You can also forward your questions to Rebekah Hanousek-Monge, the Assistant Dean and Co-Director of Graduate Recruitment, via phone at 212-284-7017, via Email at hanouser@stjohns.edu, or via AOL chat account (http://www.stjohns.edu/academics/graduate/tobin/srm/im_chat.stj). You can also use the forum mailbox or reply to this post for an answer to your question.

Feel free to inquire about ANY graduate program we offer here at Tobin
     Business
     School
. We look forward to hearing from you.

关于成绩单是否可以email

OK, here is the answer:

You can email your transcripts to Gerri Wojno at the Graduate Admissions office for review only. You will get a conditional admission based on copies. But you still need to mail you original transcripts once you graduate and receive that from your school in order to transfer the conditional admission to admission. All transcripts will eventually go to Gerri Wojno, so please email to her instead of email to Rebekah or Jennifer. Gerri's email address is: wojnog@stjohns.edu.

About Applicatoin Deadline and Scholarship

The Tobin
    College
uses a rolling admission policy.  Applications are  acted upon once they are complete.  While the College makes every attempt to advise candidates of missing application items, the application process is self-managed, and it is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all materials reach the Graduate Admission Office in time for a decision to be made for the upcoming term.

Our recommended deadlines are:
For Admission to the summer or fall term - May 1
For Admission to the spring term - November 1
For those that want to be considered for a Graduate Assistantship - March 1

Applicants to the MS in Management of Risk Program are only eligible for fall admission.

Students applying from countries outside of the United States are advised to apply well in advance of these deadlines, owing to the longer timelines required to process credentials and make visa arrangements.

About Zurich Scholarship and Graduate Assistantship

Many applicants inquire about Zurich Scholarship and GA. The scholarship and GA offers are separate from admissions decision and they will be reviewed and assessed by Rebekah.

The Zurich Scholarship is for Chinese students only, but the GA, you will compete with students from other countries as well.
