The GRE revised General Test is coming August 2011. There are a lot of exciting changes in the works. New question types. New test-taker friendly format. And many more benefits.
Plus, you can save 50% if you test between August – September 2011. See the special score reporting schedule to see if this option is right for you.

The GRE® General Test is Changing. Find Out What You Need to Know — and Why It's Good News for You..

For millions of students like you, a graduate or business degree can give you a big advantage in your future career. An important step toward achieving that goal — and the path to thousands of graduate and business programs all over the world — is to take the GRE® General Test.

Now we're ** that step even better for you. Starting August 1, 2011, the GRE® revised General Test will replace the current GRE General Test, giving you the advantage of a better test experience — and new types of questions that help show your readiness for graduate-level work.

Here's What You Can Expect from the GRE revised General Test

A new test-taker friendly design for the computer-based test that lets you edit or change your answers, skip questions and more, all within a section — giving you the freedom to use more of your own test-taking strategies. Another new feature: an on-screen calculator.
New types of questions in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections, many featuring real-life scenarios that reflect the kind of thinking you'll do in today's demanding graduate and business school programs.

Special savings of 50% when you take the GRE revised General Test between August 1 and September 30, 2011. The 50% discount means big savings for you — and another big advantage to taking the GRE revised General Test.

Important score reporting information you need to know: If you take the GRE revised General Test during our special discount period of August – September 2011, your scores will be sent by mid-November. However, if you need your scores before November 2011, take the current test before August 2011.
Something else to keep in mind when you receive your scores: The GRE revised General Test features a new score scale that can make it easier for schools to compare your GRE scores with the scores of other candidates.

*For those taking the paper-based GRE revised General Test, calculators will be provided at the test center for use during the test.

Choosing Between the Current Test and the Revised Test

To help you decide which of the two tests to take, start by selecting which schools you're most interested in, then find out when they need your scores. Different schools have different admissions deadlines, so knowing when your prospective schools need your scores is an important part of ** the decision between the GRE General Test and the GRE revised General Test., m' m5 O9 N' Q( r0 p7 u

If you need scores before November 2011, start planning now. You will need to take the current test. You will want to register early to ensure you get a seat for your preferred date and location. If you take the current test in either a split-test administration or paper-based test location early planning is especially important.

If you don't need scores until after November 2011, taking the GRE revised General Test is a smart move. With these new changes in place, the revised test will give you a better test experience — and offer an even better way to show schools that you're ready for graduate-level work.

笔考和机考结合的形式将被每月进行一到两次的机考取代;

新题型可以更好反映商学院和研究生院所需技能;

新的答题格式包括基于电脑的量化答案输入题;

减少对于单词意涵背记的孤立考察,更加突出阅读能力;

每个部分内部增设Preview和Review修改功能(不可跨越section修改答案);

新的“Mark与Review”功能方便考生快速回到先前跳过的题目;

允许考生修改编辑已经做出的答案;

2010
JULY
2011
MARCH
    March 15: Registration opens for the GRE revised General Test (If you plan on taking the current test, you can register now.)
AUGUST –
SEPTEMBER
    August 1: First day of testing for the GRE revised General Test
    August 1 – September 30: Save 50% on your test fee; if you test during this period, your scores will be sent by mid-November
OCTOBER –/ J! W3 Z3 ]2 q5 s4 o
NOVEMBER
DECEMBER
    Normal score reporting resumes. Your score report will be sent 10 – 15 days after your test date

GRE revised General Test

Reading Comprehension 阅读
Text Completion 填空
Sentence Equivalence

Policymakers must confront the dilemma that fossil fuels continue to be an indispensable source of energy even though burning them produces atmospheric accumulations of carbon dioxide that increase the likelihood of potentially disastrous global climate change. Currently, technology that would capture carbon dioxide emitted by power plants and sequester it harmlessly underground or undersea instead of releasing it into the atmosphere might double the cost of generating electricity. But because sequestration does not affect the cost of electricity transmission and distribution, delivered prices will rise less, by no more than 50 percent. Research into better technologies for capturing carbon dioxide will undoubtedly lead to lowered costs。
Sample Multiple-choice Questions — Select One Answer Choice
1. The passage implies which of the following about the current cost of generating electricity?
A. It is higher than it would be if better technologies for capturing carbon dioxide were available。
B. It is somewhat less than the cost of electricity transmission and distribution。
C. It constitutes at most half of the delivered price of electricity。
D. It is dwelt on by policymakers to the exclusion of other costs associated with electricity delivery。
E. It is not fully recovered by the prices charged directly to electricity consumers。
Answer: C

2. The passage suggests that extensive use of sequestration would, over time, have which of the following consequences?
A. The burning of fossil fuels would eventually cease to produce atmospheric accumulations of carbon dioxide。
B. The proportion of the delivered price of electricity due to generation would rise and then decline。
C. Power plants would consume progressively lower quantities of fossil fuels。
Answer: B

3. Select the sentence that explains why an outcome of sequestration that might have been expected would not occur。
Answer:
“But because sequestration does not affect the cost of electricity transmission and distribution, delivered prices will rise less, by no more than 50 percent.”

3.AW部分:

The Analytical Writing section of the GRE® revised General Test consists of two separately timed analytical writing tasks:
    An Analyze an Issue task
    An Analyze an Argument task

Analyze An Issue Task
The Analyze an Issue task assesses your ability to think critically about a topic of general interest and to clearly express your thoughts about it in writing. Each issue statement makes a claim that you can discuss from various perspectives and apply to many different situations or conditions. The issue statement is followed by a set of specific instructions. The specific instructions could be one of the following:

    Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
    Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.
    Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
    Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented above.
    Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim AND the reason on which that claim is based.
    Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy above and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position.
Analyze An Argument Task
The Analyze an Argument task assesses your ability to understand, analyze and evaluate arguments and to clearly convey your evaluation in writing. You are presented with a brief passage in which the author makes a case for some course of action or interpretation of events by presenting claims backed by reasons and evidence. Your task is to discuss the logical soundness of the author's case according to the specific instructions by critically examining the line of reasoning and the use of evidence. The specific instructions could be one of the following:

    Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
    Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
    Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
    Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the advice and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the advice.
    Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
    Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the prediction and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the prediction.
    Write a response in which you discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument.

$ T1 ^( _1 i! m, |; o
