140.Some people believe that universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. Others believe that universities should not force students to take any courses other than those that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields.
Every year there are millions of guaduates entering the market. It's important to link education with employability. So the voice is increadsingly becoming strong that students should only concentrate on courses that will help prepare them for jobs. On the contrary, some people insist on the traditional view that universities should require student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study.Which one most fits the law of current word?
In my opinion, students should have a variety of knowledge. Thus, they should take courses outside the field of his study, but how many courses one should take depends on one's ability and what to take should depend on one's own choice.
On the one hand, mastery of any spcific area requires some knowledge about a variety of others. For example, a political-science student can fully understand that field only by understanding the various sociological and historical forces that shape political ideolgy. A student even major in engineering is instrinsically  tied to other fields such as business and media. Further more, having a variety of knowledge help us appreciate the world better, but for assisting the work we major in. Einstein had said that violin had given him a lot of inspirations in the physics world. Courses in political science, philosophy, theilogy and even science can help us gain an aesthetic appreacation of the world around us.
Meanwhile I am not to deny the importance of courses that will prepare students for jobs, after all each student will go out of school to find a good job which may provide him a good life. Students criticize the schools for high rate of unemplyment of graduates. They compain schools haven't provident them essencial skills for the jobs.Parents and students advocate universities to provide only courses for the fiedls the student has chosen. For time is so limited that one can do well only in one thing. A student without special emphasis on an specific feild becomes a dilletante lacking enough knowledge or experience in any single field. How could such a graduate find a job to feed himself? Finding a good job is a pragamtic issude every graduate must face.Pressure from employment and social need of expert in an specific field drive student dessert intention to learn a variety of courses.
In the final analysis, universities should strike a proper balance on requiring students to take a variety of couses and majorrin a specific field. Certainly, students should strive to excel in the specific requirement of thei major courses of study. However, they should complement those effort by pursuiting courses work in a variety of other areas as well.As for what field and  how many fields one should take should depend on student's own requirements and hobby.
