E Heirloom tomatoes, grown from seeds saved during the previous year, although they appear less appetizing than most of their round and red supermarket cousins

D选项是完整的句子，可后半句也是一个完整的句子，没有连接词，是run-on错误。
E选项划线部分已经有两个主语了。。。

首先，确定书上说了D选项是ungrammatical（P770）,它同时说因为Grown 放前面，过于强调grown而不是主语，违背原句初衷。
E选项看明白了，非常清晰的解释！

破折号可以前后连接完整的句子，也可以连接两个分句。破折号几乎是百搭，做逗号也可以，冒号也可以，分号也可以。但是从A选项来看，这句句子有明确的转折含义，破折号是当逗号用的。当你选D时，破折号是当冒号用的，冒号的意思是后半句解释说明前半句。这与本句句的句意不符。

举一个冒号的例子：you can ask him any question - he is very nice.

这贴貌似很久了，正好看到。版主我觉得E不对主要是因为出现了双主语。诚如你说的H tomatoes后面的东西都是形容H这种西红柿的所以可以全部划去，后面那破折号里面的插入成分更没用继续划去，最后句子变成H tomatoes, heirlooms are-------就等于俩主语。 D首先没有although 句子的转折含义没了 使得前半句有歧义，什么歧义？就是 “grown from seeds...." 是H tomatoes " appear less...."的原因。 这纯粹是捏造的因果关系。 其次这句子前面是完整句， 后面从heirlooms are....又是完整句子中间就以逗号，不可以，必须有一个连词否则就是run on句子。 而且这俩句子间逻辑关系什么？ 不知道，必须由although 点出这层转折关系。以上为菜鸟的理解不知版主是否赞同~~~
