今天继续verbal分册~
今天是banana第一次参与发帖~很荣幸哈~
大家加油!
下面是作业:
9. In parts of South America, vitamin-A deficiency is a serious health problem, especially among children. In one region, agriculturists are attempting to improve nutrition by encouraging farmers to planta new variety of sweet potato called SPK004 that is rich in betacarotene, which the bodyconverts into vitaminA. The plan has good chances of success, since sweet potato is a staple of the region's diet and agriculture, and the varieties currently grown contain little beta-carotene.
Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the prediction that the plan will succeed?
(A) The growing conditions required by the varieties of sweet potato currently cultivated in the region are conditions in which SPK004 can flourish.
(B) The flesh of SPK004 differs from that of the currently cultivated sweet potatoes in color and texture, so traditional foods would look
somewhat different when prepared from SPK004.
(C) There areno other varieties of sweet potato that are significantly richer in beta-carotene than SPK004 is.
(D) The varieties of sweet potatocurrently cultivated in the region contain some important nutrients that are lacking in SPK004.
(E) There are other vegetables currently grown in the regionthat contain more beta-carotene than the currently cultivated varieties of sweet
potato do.

10. Which of the following best completes the passage below?
At a recent conference on environmental threats to the North Sea, most participating countries favored uniform controls on the quality of effluents, whether or not specific environmental damage could be attributed to a particular source of effluent. What must, of course, be shown, in order to avoid excessively restrictive controls, is that_________.
(A) any uniform controls that are adopted are likely to be implemented without delay
(B) any substance to be made subject to controls can actually cause environmental damage
(C) the countries favoring uniform controls are those generating the largestquantities of effluents
(D) all of any given pollutant that is to be controlled actually reaches the North Sea at present
(E) environmental damage already inflicted on the North Sea is reversible

11. Shelby Industries manufactures and sells the same gauges as Jones Industries. Employee wages account for 40 percent of the cost of manufacturing gauges at both Shelby Industries and Jones Industries. Shelby Industries is seeking a competitive advantage over Jones Industries. Therefore, to promote this end, Shelby Industries should lower employee wages.
Which of the following, if true, would mostweaken the argument above?
(A) Because theymake a small number of precision instruments, gauge manufacturers cannot receive volume discounts on rawmaterials .
(B) Lowering wages would reduce the quality of employee work, and this reduced quality would lead to lowered sales.
(C) Jones Industries has taken away 20 percent of Shelby Industries' business over the last year.
(D) Shelby Industries pays its employees, on average, 10 percent more than does Jones Industries.
(E) Many people who work for manufacturing plants live in areas in which the manufacturing plant they work for is the only industry.

12. Large national budget deficits do not cause large trade deficits. If they did, countries with the largest budget deficits would also have the largest trade deficits. In fact, when deficit figures are adjusted so that different countries are reliably comparable to each other, there is no such correlation.
If the statements above are all true, which of the following can properly be inferred on the basis of them?
(A) Countries with large national budget deficits tend to restrict foreign trade.
(B) Reliable comparisons of the deficit figures of one country with those of another are impossible.
(C) Reducing a country's national budget deficit will not necessarily result in a lowering of any trade deficit that country may have.
(D) When countries are ordered from largest to smallest in terms of population, the smallest countries generally have the smallest budget
     and trade deficits.
(E) Countries with the largest trade deficits never have similarly large national budget deficits.

The following appeared in a presentation by the chief production manager of a machine parts manufacturing company at a management meeting:

“Our factory in Cookville is our most advanced and efficient. It is capable of producing ten drill bits for each dollar of production costs, whereas none of our other factories can produce more than seven drill bits per dollar of production costs. Therefore, we can reduce our overall drill bit production costs by devoting the Cookville factory entirely to drill bit production. Since reducing the production costs of individual machine parts is the only way to achieve our larger goal of reducing our overall production costs, dedicating the Cookville factory entirely to drill bit production and shifting all other machine part production to our other factories will help us to attain that larger goal.”

25s
P: The deficiency of Vitamine A in south Africa is a problem.
C: The SPK004 can solve the problem since it can converts into Vitamin A for the local use.
S: The SPK004 is suitable for planting in that region.
A: A

(A) The growing conditions required by the varieties of sweet potato currently cultivated in the region are conditions in which SPK004 can flourish.
(B) The flesh of SPK004 differs from that of the currently cultivated sweet potatoes in color and texture, so traditional foods would look somewhat different when prepared from SPK004. (the difference of the color might weaken the effect of SPK004.)
(C) There are no other varieties of sweet potato that are significantly richer in beta-carotene than SPK004 is. (Other varieties are Irrelevant)
(D) The varieties of sweet potato currently cultivated in the region contain some important nutrients that are lacking in SPK004. (Weaken)
(E) There are other vegetables currently grown in the region that contain more beta-carotene than the currently cultivated varieties of sweet potato do. (No comparison between vegetables and sweet potatoes)

25s
P: Most countries favored uniform controls about effluents on sea.
C: Uniform controls can avoid excessive controls of the effluents.
Complete: To control effluents only without controlling other unnecessary effluents.
A: B
(A) any uniform controls that are adopted are likely to be implemented without delay (Irrelevant)
(B) any substance to be made subject to controls can actually cause environmental damage
(C) the countries favoring uniform controls are those generating the largest quantities of effluents (We don't care about what are these countries)
(D) all of any given pollutant that is to be controlled actually reaches the North Sea at present (Weaken)
(E) environmental damage already inflicted on the North Sea is reversible (还是不能说明问题)

40s
P:S and J sell the same amount of gauges, and the cost of labor occupies 40% for both of these two companies.
C: S has to lower the salary if S wants to be more competitive.
W: J will lower its employees' salary or lower its price of gauges.
A: B
(A) Because theymake a small number of precision instruments, gauge manufacturers cannot receive volume discounts on rawmaterials .(discount is irrelevant)
(B) Lowering wages would reduce the quality of employee work, and this reduced quality would lead to lowered sales.
(C) Jones Industries has taken away 20 percent of Shelby Industries' business over the last year. (Something has already happened does not help to weaken the argument)
(D) Shelby Industries pays its employees, on average, 10 percent more than does Jones Industries. (gives a reason why S should lower the salary of employees--->strengthen )
(E) Many people who work for manufacturing plants live in areas in which the manufacturing plant they work for is the only industry. (distant is out of scope)

32s
P: If trade deficit causes the national deficit, then the Large trade deficit should have the large national deficit.
C: However, there's no such correlation between trade deficit and national deficit.
I:  Trade deficit doesn't have cause-effect with the national deficit
A: C
(A) Countries with large national budget deficits tend to restrict foreign trade. (out of scope)
(B) Reliable comparisons of the deficit figures of one country with those of another are impossible. (go back to the last sentence)
(C) Reducing a country's national budget deficit will not necessarily result in a lowering of any trade deficit that country may have.
(D) When countries are ordered from largest to smallest in terms of population, the smallest countries generally have the smallest budget and trade deficits. (no population is mentioned)
(E) Countries with the largest trade deficits never have similarly large national budget deficits. (never have is too absolute!)
