In a new police program, automobile owners in some neighborhoods whose cars are not normally driven between 1 A.M. and 5 A.M. can display a special decal in the cars’ windows and authorize police to stop the cars during those hours to check the drivers’ licenses. The theft rate for cars bearing such decals is much lower than had been usual for cars in those neighborhoods.

If it is concluded from the statements above that automobile theft has been reduced by the program, which one of the following would be most important to answer in evaluating that conclusion?

A: Are owners who are cautious enough to join the program taking other special measures to protect their cars against theft?

The more television children watch, the less competent they are in mathematical knowledge. More than a third of children in the United States watch television for more than five hours a day; in South Korea the figure is only 7 percent. But whereas less than 15 percent of children in the United States understand advanced measurement and geometric concepts, 40 percent of South Korean children are competent in these areas. Therefore, if United States children are to do well in mathematics, they must watch less television.

Which one of the following is an assumption upon in advanced measurement and geometric concepts than are South Korean children?

A: The instruction in advanced measurement and geometric concepts available to children in the United States is not substantially worse than that available to South Korean children.

Nature constantly adjusts the atmospheric carbon level. An increase in the level causes the atmosphere to hold more heat, which causes more water to evaporate from the oceans, which causes increased rain. Rain washes some carbon from the air into the oceans, where it eventually becomes part of the seabed. A decrease in atmosphere carbon causes decreased evaporation from the oceans, which cause less rain, and thus less carbon is washed into the oceans. Yet some environmentalists worry that burning fossil fuels may raise atmospheric carbon to a dangerous level. It is true that a sustained increase would threaten human life. But the environmentalists should relax---nature will continually adjust the carbon level.

Which one of the following, if true, would most weaken the argument in the passage?
A: The natural adjustment process, which occurs over millions of years, allow wide fluctuations in the carbon level in the short term
Nature cannot withstand such fluctuation."
In January there was a large drop in the number of new houses sold, because interest rates for mortgages were falling and many consumers were waiting to see how low the rates would go. This large sales drop was accompanied by a sharp rise in the average price of new houses sold.
Which of the following, if true, best explains the sharp rise in the average price of new houses?
A: Sales of higher-priced houses were unaffected by the sales drop because their purchasers have fewer constraints limiting the total amount they pay.

(18)The following is an excerpt from a memo written by the head of a governmental department.
“Neither stronger ethics regulations nor stronger enforcement mechanisms are necessary to ensure ethical behavior by companies doing business with this department. We already have a code of ethics that companies have agreed to follow it. We also know that the code is relevant to the current business environment because it was approved within the last year, and in direct response to specific violations committed by companies with which we were then working- not in abstract anticipation of potential violations, as so many such codes are.”

1. 42s
Conclusion: The program was successful
Premise: The crime rate was lower
Background: The definition of the program

Evaluate: Any other method leads to the lower rate?

2. 52s
Conclusion: If US students want to perform well in math, watch less TV
Premise: Survey: US students watch lots of TV, do poor in math.

Assumption: No other factor that brings that difference.

3. 50s
Conclusion: The behavior of people should not be worried
Premise: Nature can adjust to carbon level changes

Weaken: Nature cannot withstand the change brought by human.

4. 27s
Info1: Drop in the number of new houses sold
Info2: Average sales prices go up

Resolve: High prices houses sell well.

35s
Premise: The car can be checked from 1-5am by the police
Conclusion: The theft rate will be decreased.
。看了答案,除了这个,可不可以说what if the crime rates happened mostly at 11-1am? or Can the police check this routinely?

28s
Premise: Korean children watch less TV and they are smarter.
Conclusion: US children should watch less TV in order to be more competent.

50s
Premise: The carbon level is affected by nature
Conclusion: So the scientists don't have to worry if the carbon level will cause human life in danger.
Weaken: The nature would produce special particles when the air meets enough fuel and finally increase the carbon level.

30s
Premise: The NO. of new houses have been sold was declined.
But the new houses average price goes up.
Paradox: The new houses which have been sold are located in the areas with more potentiality of values.

AWA:
Premise: We have approved a code to enforce the ethic of a company.
Conclusion: New enforcement and regulation can't ensure the ethic of a company at the end.
Reasoning:
The approved code of ethic regulation can't apply to all companies in all situations since each company has its own character.
It's hard to monitor if all companies follow the code in all situations even though they agree to follow it.
It's better to have a supplementary code upon this approved code when each company deals with different depts.

open to discuss~

1. 51s
The cars which are not normally driven between 1am to 5am can show a special decal to prevent from theft. The theft rate of cars doing so in the city is lower than that without such method in neiborhoods.
Evaluation:

2.34s
The children in U.S. spend more time watching TV than those in Korea.
And More children in Korea can master advanced maths than those in the U.S.
Conclusion:
IF the children wants to do well in maths, they need to watch less TV.
Assumption:

3. 40s
Carbon Dioxide
Nature will adjust to the new emission level cauzed by Fossil Fuel.
Weaken:

4.29s
House sales rate dropped, while new houses prices rised.
And the comsumers are waiting and seeing the rate to be lower.
solve the discrepancy:
some other factors to cauze the sharply rising price

#1 45s

Q:assumption——

Q:weaken——

Q:paradox—— 。
