Can an Online Degree Really Help You Get a Job?

HR is still not familiar with Mooc programme, brick-and-mortar schools' degree is more convincing when students are competing for jobs.

But some people say that online courses get more reputation and recognition than before they are.

However, some companies collaborate with online platforms to teach their potential employees with the knowledge and skill they need.

Jay Bhatt was a middle-school math teacher in the early ‘90s, and then went on to work as an investment banker.Later he did a few management jobs in software company, and in 2012,he joined Blackboard as chief executive in late 2012.

Blackboard has a long and involved history as a pioneer in education technology and had a big annual revenue.Blackboard’s business focus on higher ed, professional ed, and even K-12. Eighty percent is domestic, with 20 percent being international.Blackboard is trying to extend its international part and engaging in efforts to achieve education internationalization.

The author highlights some Bhatt’s opinions.
1.The company which wants to be the leader of the edtech industry must be a leader in technology firstly;
2.The learner is the center of their everything and everything from their user interfaces and user experience to their product design and analyses of the marketplace will deter their product design.
3.Edtech industry still has very big development prospect really, and the growth now is not a bubble.
4.If you’re going to extend education to the billions of people who have historically not had access to education, it’s going to be through digital textbooks but rather than physical textbooks.

The University of Phoenix set up series online tools to help its students get a job recently. However,it seems to be fruitless to do these work, and the school also suffers shortage of funds which may affact some students. So here comes a question:Can online degree do help for getting jobs?
T3 2'43
Although students hope that online degree really help, but the fact is cruel-----If the candidate doesn't have a bricks-and-mortat universities' degree,no matter how much online degree they obtain, they wouldn't have a second glance from HRs.
T4 1'27
The MOOCs,unlike the University of Phoenix, have many prestigious universities behind with high reputation. But they have a different problem: they don't offer any major degree,or even a completion certificates.
T5 2'02
MOOCs offer different approach of learning for 20 or 30 something, willing to help students figure out what a company do need from them. And a way to make online degree effective is choosing schools which are inputed in curriculum by companies, except for some skills that need to be learn face to face.
T6 1'58
The answer of whether online education could help students finding jobs would be yes, sometimes. Not all HRs in Fortune 500 companies agree with online degree, some of them worries that it might not be as challenging as traditional education.

Time2 01.24
Having been working on this program for a couple of years, the University of Phoenix has recently created series of online tools to help students find suitable jobs when graduation. With the increasing national unemployment rate, getting a job is the main goal for many adults to pursue a degree, online or otherwise.
Time3 01.47
The past decade has witnessed the increase in online education. There are more and more people choosing to get a degree online despite the fact that concerns about the quality of online education and its usefulness in getting a job still exist. And perceptions of online-only degrees are slowly shifting. Surveys showed that their inferior position is being improved though there are some HR managers who make hiring decisions based on name recognition and reputation.
Time4 01.30
The newest players taking online education may have no problem with name recognition since many prestigious universities also offer the service. But the problem these schools have is that they don’t offer degree programs for their students, merely a certificate of completion, so when hunting jobs, many people who with online education will find it hard to prove their ability.
Time5 02.10
Considering that problem, some schools are trying to figure out what skills employers are looking for and to equip their students with those skills. Western Governors University (WGU) has allowed employers to consult on curriculum development and other aspects of the program. The logistics and delivery giant UPS has cooperated with various online and brick-and-mortar(实体的) schools to design programs aiming to create ideal candidates.
Time6 01.09
The University of Phoenix will continue its online education programs and even expand them by teaming up with companies. From the views of most HR executives of famous companies, the future of an online degree for finding jobs is promising even though it will face many challenges.
