In applying for the MAcc, what if my GPA is low?
Students may consider retaking an accounting course when an exceptionally low grade has affected the grade-point average. Although the University will consider all grades in the student's GPA, the College of Business will use the highest grade earned in calculating the upper division accounting grade point average.
In applying for the MAcc, what if my GMAT is low?
Students who do not achieve an acceptable score on the GMAT may retake the exam to attempt to earn a higher score. The College of Business will consider the highest score earned on the exam for admission decisions into the MAcc program.
How likely will it be that I will receive an Assistantship if I apply?
Many good MAcc applicants apply for Assistantships, but only a few are awarded for each semester. The awards are competitive based primarily on academics, thus, it is dependent on the quality of the other applicants when you apply as well as how many Assistantships are available to be awarded in that semester. In a typical semester, we might have 40 applicants and three assistantships to offer. In the past, recipients have had GMAT scores in the 600 and greater range and GPAs over 3.75.
What do Assistantship awards entail?
Assistantships are a combination of cash payments and tuition waivers and require the student to work 10 hours per week as a graduate, research, or teaching assistant. Assignments of specific duties are assigned according to the current needs of the Department of Accounting. Tuition waivers include 9 hours of the in-state portion of tuition for each semester. The student is responsible for any out-of-state tuition and other fees. The cash portion of the assistantship is approximately $1,500 per semester.
How likely will it be that I will receive a Fellowship if I apply?
Like Assistantships, Fellowships are competitive and approximately four are given in each semester. Prior recipients have had GMAT scores around 600 and GPAs greater than 3.5. They typically require no service to the Department and are cash awards of approximately $500 per semester.
If I do not receive an Assistantship or Fellowship upon admission, can I reapply in subsequent semesters?
You may be reconsidered, however, you must communicate in writing to the Graduate Office, College of Business, that you want to be reconsidered for an award. When the MAcc Committee meets to consider new admissions, they will consider all applicants for financial awards.
Which major is best and what if I change my mind?
No one major is inherently better than another. If you are interested in an audit position, you would likely choose Assurance Services. Those interested in tax planning and other tax issues would likely choose Tax. Students thinking about working for a large corporation or government would likely choose Corporate. The Accounting Information Systems major provides a specialty for consulting, but it also provides expertise often needed in auditing or the corporate world. You can change your major up to the time you register for classes in the MAcc program. Employers seem to be as interested in your grades and that you received a MAcc degree as with what major that you selected.
Can I complete the MAcc on a part-time basis?
Yes, you may take fewer than the regular load of classes each semester (12 hours in Spring and Fall and 9 in Summer). However, since most classes are offered only once a year, you must take considerable care in selecting classes. If you do not take a required class when it is offered, it will not likely be offered again for a full year. If you are a part-time student, try to take the required classes first. This will give you the most flexibility. Also, most classes are only offered during the day. Thus, if you work, you should allow for this in planning your schedule.
What if my undergraduate degree is not in accounting?
If you have a degree in any other major outside of business, we offer a three-semester foundation course program that will allow you to complete the MAcc program. If you have a business degree, then you would just take those foundation courses that you did not take in your business degree program. You will take primarily accounting courses. In most cases, it takes two semesters of work to accomplish this work. Before you begin this process, you should discuss your specific case with the MAcc adviser. Also, before you can begin taking any MAcc courses or any other graduate courses in the MAcc program, you must meet the GPA and GMAT requirements (generally a 3.0 and 550 respectively).
