我觉得这就是ETS设的陷阱，形式上不对称，其实construction began也对，began不用被动是因为开始这个动作用被动的话少了明确的动作发出者。而因为construction本身不能自己complete,故用被动（平时看到很多例子都complete作是被动）

这里是一个句子翻译的问题，说M是英国的殖民地，作为统治语言英语很少用。前后两句有明显的转折的意思。 所以这里But不能少。

介系词后面只能加受词（名词）

 

又不像except for 是一个介词词组

那为什么可以再加一个「in」？

因为如果choose b 就变成了 句子，except **， 句子语法上 “句子，句子”是不正确的，所以需要+but，而且加了but语义上表达也很合理
