We, a group of Chinese students at Wharton 06/07, would love to answer your questions with regards to application for Wharton, Wharton school, Life in wharton or any topic related to wharton.

Please feel free to post your questions here. We will try our best to address them. If we are not sure about the answer, we will consult the MBA office.

The moderator of chasedream will collect questions every week and sort them into different categories as listed on floor 2-8. Our volunsteers from Wharton 06 and 07 take turns weekly to answer questions.

This thread is intended to collect any Wharton-related questions from prospective Wharton applicants. Your questions will be collected and sorted into different categories. Then they will be answered by current Wharton students in the same post. And the specific floor # for the answer will be indicated in parathesis after the question. The answers might come in slow due to the workload of the current Wharton students.  

Please review the question lists from 3rd floor through 8th floor before you post your own question(s). In order to work in a more efficient manner, the duplicate questions will not be collected to the lists.

Application Process

takes any questions related application process, such as qualification, essay, interview, school visits etc.

1. Could you give me some advice on how to explain my career transfer more reasonably and logically? (9th)

2. I first took my GMAT in June, I in fact prepared nothing at that time and got only a poor score of 650,driving me to study hard day and night in the following two months, and got my second GMAT score of 760 in Agu. Does my first score will negatively affect my application to Wharton? Do I need to make some explanation why I got a much higher second score in my application? (10th)

3. whether there is any Chinese(mainland) applicant who succeeds in getting into/completing the Insurance & Risk Management(IRM) concentration programme. What's his/her background (TOEFL, GMAT, W/E etc.)?  (11th)

4. As a BA degree holder, I am particularly concerned about my Math/Quantitive skills. Could someone please explain how much this part weights for IRM major? By the way, I am not going to apply for Acturial, but Insurance and Risk Management. (11th)

5. As I have a very long working experience, whether I should place some of my accomplishments or achievements on Essay1- the career path to dates. (11th)

6. As I have no formal higher education, My GPA is only 78 because I studied all by myself. Whether this score is possible for me to be admitted. (11th)

7. Is it mandatory to require ETS send the official GMAT and TOEFL score to wharton before application deadline or I can send them after admission? (11th)

8. I applied in 2004-2005 but failed. I reapply this year, but found that my account and password do not work. Meanwhile, I can not re-send my account and password to me throught my E-mail account registered with Wharton. Seems like I have to use a new account. But if I use a new account, how do they match my application with last year's materials. (21st)

9. 很多学校都不很在意AWA,wahrton怎么认为呢 (21st)

10. 我的背景很特殊，因为我是中专毕业后来，读了一个成人的专科学校，而后通过自学考试取得本科学位．我不是很确认专科学校的毕业是用associate吗，另外专升本应该怎么翻译 (21st)

11.签证时的财务证明是否是必须的？如果需要办理贷款手续，是到了学校再办么 (21st)

12. I just read from CD that Wharton has very specific requirment for the percentage of Verbal of GMAT.  It says that Verbal>=80%. Mine is only 75%.  Does it mean that I have no chance? (23rd)

13. 请问今年大陆去Wharton的共有几个,他们的背景如何,能否介绍,谢谢 (33rd)

21. 请问如果essay超字数要不要紧？比如说essay1写了1500字，是不是不好？(51st)

1. 听说wharton会对课程成绩最后15%的学生发警告,收到8次警告就会被退学, 是真的吗?那不是竞争压力会很大? (43rd)

Career Development

1. Does Wharton provide any special course that helps somebody who aims to develop his career on real estate aspects? (9th)

2. What is the percentage of Chinese MBA students of Wharton joined the consulting firms in the US after they finished their MBA program? (9th)

There are many career changers in MBA program(from engineering to
finance, marketing to investment banking, etc..), so it is quite common
to write some stories that influence your career decisions. Make sure
that your stories make SENSE. It does not matter which career you want
- the contents matter!


Also, when structure your essays, you should spend 2-3 scentences to
summerize what you learned from the experiences, why they have impacts
on you..

Does Wharton provide any special course that helps somebody who aims to
develop his career on real estate aspects?


I know at least one Chinese student is from real estate development.
There are many more from american students. Wharton has Real Estate
major and you can find all courses online. I dont recall all the
details but I can assure that you will have tons of opportunities to
learn real estate in Wharton.

What is the percentage of Chinese MBA students of Wharton joined the
consulting firms in the US after they finished their MBA program?

There
is no official data but I can tell you my observation. Many are
interested in finance, consulting is second. But a lot of students do
not like consulting due to its life style. The estimation is about
20-30% will pursue consulting jobs. Having said that, I do think there
are many consulting opportunities since a lot of firms recruiting on
campus...
