The benefits and advantages of attending a top or "quasi" top school can never be overstated.

That's right, it is often necessary to obtain "insider information" about a program because what is posted on its website may not always be complete or accurate (it has been reported that this is commonly the case for non-top programs) .

At this point, the application deadlines at top schools (encompassing Tier 1 and Tier 2) have, by and large, passed, and those at Tier 3 schools will pass soon. Best of luck to everyone!

One posting just mentioned University of Georgia. The PhD Program at UG belongs to Tier 3 in our placement rankings and so is fairly good. It is rising visibly with increasing support in both funding and advising. Also, the idyllic setting of Athens is ideal for research. Wish everyone who has applied to this school good luck.

One asked about the differences between research schools and teaching schools. These are considerable with respect to research intensity and rigor, teaching load (a respondent to her query mentioned this), compensation, etc., and have been discussed or touched upon in various previous postings.

Hearty congratulations to the student who received an offer of acceptance into the PhD Program in Actuarial Science, Risk Management, and Insurance at Wisconsin School of Business, University of Wisconsin. This is the first offer reported in the forum thus far and will undoutedly be one of the best for the 2020 admissions cycle. WSB is a top business school, and its PhD program is in Tier Two overall in placements, making it on a par with the programs at University of Minnesota, Indiana University-Bloomington, University of Washington, among others.

Someone just dug out a posting on finance programs that was published in 2012, or more than seven years ago. The information provided is not accurate at points and also is quite outdated by now. We would like to briefly respond to one or two of the followup postings there regarding the following programs: Kansas University, Temple University, UTD, University of Tennessee, Drexel University, and Syracuse. In terms of placements, UTD, Kansas, and Temple are clearly the best among these (for details, see our Placement Rankings), and therefore are supposed to be the most competitive. For a more nuanced comparison, one needs to check out each of them, but UTD should be the strongest. Also note that each of them has risen rapidly in recent years. The program at University Tennessee is also outstanding (its alumni placement record is available online), but it is fairly small in size and does not seem to be known that well among the Chinese. Drexel and Syracuse are very similar with respect to placements although the latter does better (again, please refer to our Placements Rankings). Drexel has several illustrous finance professors (this has been discussed before); its PhD program is good but has difficulty in placing graduates even at what we call "balanced" schools, and the finance professors seem to be more and more aware of this. Syracuse is best known for Masters programs; its PhD program is small and has had several first-rate placements in the past but seems to be going downhill.

All of the above are non-top schools, so we cannot expect their placements to be "phenomenal". But if you are admitted to UTD, Temple, Kansas, or Tennessee and do really well, then you have a fair chance of hitting a research school (even one ranking above each of these); for Syracuse and Drexel, the chance may be significantly reduced unless you are a "star', but it may not be that difficult to get into a "balanced" school.

By the way, terminologically the word 'balanced" is often a euphemism for "teaching".

One posting recommended UTD Top 100 as a major information source for applicants. This ranking has been severely criticized on several accounts. For example, it does not take per capita research productivity into consideration (this is unfair for small schools) nor include economics journals. The research ranking developed by Leeds School of Business, University of Colorado, which is based on UTD Top 100, is claimed to be more accurate and reliable. For details, check out Leeds School of Business website.

Another issue on UTD ranking is that top school accounting faculty members regularly publish in top 3 finance journals, but there is no way to measure that unless you combine productivity of accounting and finance together.
