我觉得还是主语问题，gmat里还是习惯用it形式主语来代替而不直接用to do做主语的吧~~我也不太确定，帮你顶一下召唤大牛~

to be able to 是不能做主语的，在这里，to be able to 做主语会比较奇怪吧，或者有这样的句型，to be able to do sth is to ?也很奇怪。。。。。
ability是后面when引导的句子的主语。。。。而且名词做主语是不是优于to do，在很多情况下？用doing或者to do 做主语，要句子本身动感很强吧？anyway,我是这样理解的，而且able优于ability是怎么的出来的？

形容词名词两个根本不能比较啊，你说to do 或者doing做主语优于名词还好解释一点，形容词跟名词在句子中的作用都不一样没法比较啊，比如你不能说手优于耳朵一样
嗯或者楼主的意思是有形容词组成的名词词组
嗯，兼听则明的意思是我说的听听就可以，别太当真，哈哈，因为我说的也不知道对不对，楼主多听听其他人的意见，然后自己总结下自己的想法
to be able to do 可能也能做主语，比如to be able to 赚钱，means to be qualified for working，哈哈不make sense 的句子，语法上用来 解释一下吧

就是说从逻辑层面来看：由于to do过于强调动作，选择to be able题目就是说“能够适应环境”这个多次发生的动作导致blahblah。。而是“能够适应环境的能力”创造了。。。
是这个意思么？
至于结构：when to be able to adjust to the environmental changes wrought by human beings has created a whole new class of dominant large mammals

我没发现有问题啊~是我忽略了什么习惯用法么？？

to do 作主语，that从句作主语，在gamt中要变为 it的形式主语。（Manhattan）
不能因为adj优于名词就刻意的转变成adj呀。这里为了转变成adj，人为的加了to be，反而wordy了。
所以我觉得，仅仅是我觉得啊，adj 优于n原则在遇到be adj时 （be原型）要注意是不是wordy了，is am are  able 肯定比has adility好。
