19 A pioneer journalist, Nellie Bly’s exploits included circling the globe faster than Jules Verne’s fictional Phileas Fogg.
A A pioneer journalist, Nellie Bly’s exploits included
B The exploits of Nellie Bly, a pioneer journalist, included
C Nellie Bly wasa pioneer journalist including in her exploits the
D Included in the pioneer journalist Nellie Bly’s exploits are
E The pioneer journalist’s exploits of Nellie Bly included

By 1940, the pilot Jacqueline Cochran held seventeen official national and international speed records, and she earned them at a time when aviation was still so new for many of the planes she flew to be of dangerously experimental design.
A and she earned them at a time when aviation was still so new for many of the planes she flew to be

B earning them at a time that aviation was still so new for many of the planes she flew to be

C earning them at a time where aviation was still so new that many of the planes she flew were

D earned at a time in which aviation was still so niw such that many of the planes she flew were

E earned them at a time when aviation was still so new that many of the planes she flew were

In 1713, Alexander Pope began his translation of the Iliad, a work that took him seven years...此处a work作为同位语修饰his translation。
19题 The exploits of Nellie Bly, a pioneer journalist, included... a pioneer journalist作为同位语修饰紧邻的名词 Nellie Bly。
按照manhattan语法charpter6 modifier 的讲解,touch rule:a noun and its modifier shoule touch each other.
Nellie Bly

wordy。。。。

A(我当初错选了A)too wordy,不如earned 修饰speed ecords来得直接。
B earning主语是the pilot,而不是records, 但是earning离records太近了,making this sectence hard to process(原话);so new that many x were y,比so new for many x to be y更清晰
C where错
D 应该用when来引导;such多余
E对,earned就近修饰records;清晰的使用了so new that many x were y

-- by 会员 jingangel (2012/8/8 18:42:30)

aviation was so new for planes to be of dangerously experimental  design.
-->og对A的评价很好:this version is too wordy and does not contribute to clarity.

E,avitaion was so new that planes were of dangerously experimental  design
