关于过去完成时和一般过去时

很多时候搞不清什么时候用过去完成时，什么时候用一般过去时。今天做了一个题，好像明白了一点。自己总结了一下，不确定是否正确：句子中即使有发生在过去的过去的事件，也不一定就是过去完成时。因为过去完成时要求“过去的过去”要持续到“过去”或者对“过去”有影响。如这个题：
His studies of ice-polished rocks in his Alpine
homeland, far outside the range of present-day
glaciers, led Louis Agassiz in 1837 to propose the
concept of an age in which great ice sheets had
existed in now currently temperate areas.
虽然exist发生在led之前，但是这个exist对led没有影响，只是之前发生的而已，所以用had existed不对，要用existed。
是这样的吗？？

那么有一句话：The band U2 was one of many new groups on the rock music scene in the early 1980's,but less than ten years later,U2 had fully eclipsed its early rivals in the pantheon of popular music.应该怎么理解呢？我们都知道我们学的英语语法中说明了过去完成时是发生在一般过去时之前的，并持续影响到一般现在式发生的时候，但上面那句话明显的意思是过去完成时表示从“过去”影响一直延续下去。

到底应该怎么理解呢？

你的理解基本正确， 过去完成时的使用一定要配合一个相关的过去时间点。此处，led之后的内容已经独立于led之外了，所以不必须要使用过去完成时。我感觉完成时使用的通常较少，但每次使用几乎都偶明确的时间来支持（个别由于逻辑原因而要求使用完成时的情况也有，个别分析吧。。。）

还是木有人帮忙指正我的结论，想知道过去完成时所谓的时间点，到底要满足啥条件~~~

纠正一下。
代词所有格向后指代，在PREP是有不少例子的。
单是her我就见过两三回。


例如：66. (27974-!-item-!-188;#058&003736)

这个句子不是完全划线的。。his那部分没划线。怪我没说清楚。。
这个是OG 12 SC 70题。可能整个句子不知道从什么文章里截出来的吧。
划线部分是：in which great ice sheets had existed in now currently temperate areas.
选项有：(A) in which great ice sheets had existed in now
currently temperate areas
(B) in which great ice sheets existed in what are
now temperate areas
(C) when great ice sheets existed where there were
areas now temperate
(D) when great ice sheets had existed in current
temperate areas
(E) when great ice sheets existed in areas now that
are temperate
答案是B

关于这个had existed 的时间点就是我纠结的东西了。。明确的时间点是不是要满足像我说的那种情况，才能算有支持的？

这题据错在句子不能以his开头，因为他的没有指代（代词基本不能向后指代）。至于had existed也错，因为没有一个过去的时间点来支持had
