138. Although she was considered among her contemporaries to be the better poet than her husband, later Elizabeth Barrett Browning was overshadowed by his success.

A, same as above
B, Although Elizabeth Barrett Brwoning was considered among her contemporaries as a better poet than her husband, she was later overshadowed by his success.
C, Later overshadowed by the success of her husband, Elizabeth Barrett Brwoning's poetry had been considered among her contemporaries to be better than that of her husband.
D, Although Elizabeth Barrett browning's success was later overshadowed by that of her husband, among her contemporaries she was considered the better poet.
E, Elizabeth Barrett Browning's poetry was considered among her contemporaries as better than her husband, but her success was later overshadowed by his husband.

正确答案选D,可是D不是改变句意了吗,从A看,这句话的侧重点是EBB被她老公overshadow了,D强调的是EBB是比她老公更好的诗人。不是说语义为王吗?不解,求教各位牛人!谢谢!!

更新:我把OG的解释也打出来

Idiom;Verb Form; Pogical Predication
the sentence misuses the location the better poet. It is acceptbale to say a better poet than but not the better poet than. If you have already mentioned two poets X and Y, and you want to say that X is better than Y, you can either say X is a better poet than Y or simply, X is the better poet.

Although she was considered among her contemporaries to be the better poet than her husband, later Elizabeth Barrett Browning was overshadowed by his success.

A, same as above
两个问题:1.EB和success比较,错误。2."the better"只能用在句子前边已经出现了两个相比较的词,比如:Tuck and Yale are preeminent school, but TUCK is the better on MBA program. 在A中并没有先出现EB和her husband.
B, Although Elizabeth Barrett Brwoning was considered among her contemporaries as a better poet than her husband, she was later overshadowed by his success.
两个问题:1.EB和success比较,错误。2.“was considered among her contemporaries as”有歧义,一种意思是“EB被认为是她的同龄人中XXX";另一种意思是“EB被她的同龄人认为是XXX"。
C, Later overshadowed by the success of her husband, Elizabeth Barrett Brwoning's poetry had been considered among her contemporaries to be better than that of her husband.
句首的modifier修饰了poetry,而不是EB,逻辑错误。
D, Although Elizabeth Barrett browning's success was later overshadowed by that of her husband, among her contemporaries she was considered the better poet.
EB's sucess与that(=sucess) of her husband比较,正确。
E, Elizabeth Barrett Browning's poetry was considered among her contemporaries as better than her husband, but her success was later overshadowed by his husband.
EB'S poetry和her husband比较,错误; success和his husband比较,错误。

A,This version of the sentence misuses the idiom the better poet, most likely confusing it with the idiom a better poet than.

B, Was considered among her contemporaries as is awkward and unnecesarily creates a potential misreading ( she was considered to be among her contemporaries).

C, The subject here is Elizabeth Barrett Browing's poetry, not Elizabeth Barrett Browning, so the antecedent of her in her husband could comically be taken to be EBB's poetry. Furthermore, the tense of had been considered paires oddly with Later overshadowed. Each seems to be in reaction to some particular time T- later than T and earlier than T, but when T was or its significance is never indicated.

D. Correct. This version avoids the problems of the other versions.

E. This sentence comically compares EBB's poetry to her husband.

According to OG explanation and personal understanding, I summarize some key points in this case.
1. Be considered sth. "sth" should be subject to "touch rule". if not, that could be confusing to think of "other thing" which is closer to "considered" as the target.( in this point, D is better than others.)
2. The article "the" is incorrect because when comparing two objects, we use "a" rather than "the". (A should be eliminated.)
3. Past perfect is used to stress the subsequence and "signal tense". And the conjunction functioning as contrast should not be omitted because it changes the meaning of the sentence. ( C should be eliminated.)
4. When it comes to comparison, be agreed. (E should be eliminated.)

Note the following:
In the OA, the referent for she (subject pronoun) seems to be Elizabeth Barrett Browning's (a possessive).
In years past, this sort of construction was thought to be an error on the GMAT.
The OA to SC138 in the OG16 establishes a precedent:
On the current GMAT, it is permissible for a subject pronoun such as she to serve to refer to a possessive.
