thanks for your kind words. wish everyone best of the luck.

As of me, this has been long journey. I started thinking of MBA five years ago, but I was not ready at that time. Applying for MBA is a tricky business. It is not about how good you are sometimes, it is about whether you present yourself the right way or saying the right thing.

Cong~ Funnytiger. Can you let us know why you chose a part-time MBA program rather than a full-time one? I am still considering whether to quit my job and go to a full-time MBA program. Another choice is going to an evening part-time MBA offered by a top 20 business school in my town. Under today's ailing economy, it's risky to quit my current job and give out $100k to jump in the full-time MBA pool. It would be fine if I just wanna advance within my current company. However, sounds it will be very difficult to change my career path by just getting a part-time MBA. Can you please share what you think? Thanks.

Also, Funnytiger, what's the total cost of the Haas Part-Time MBA program? Is it a 3-year program? Thanks.
作者: funnytiger    时间: 2003-6-4 01:22
freenolimit,

to me, I believe part-time MBA is more feasible to me. I have a decent income, a top20 MBA degree these days won't make the figure I am making right now. So I want to take less risk, but still enjoy the upside of a MBA degree that I can get later in my career.
Besides, I need to support my future wife, she may go for top 10 law school, that means even bigger debt. I am old, I cannot have 200K debt right off the bat. On the other hand, I am a california resident and a Chinese, I don't really have a good chance applying for a public school where asian usually dominate the population.

it is harder to change career path through part-time MBA, the main reason is that you cannot take advantage of the internship opportunity. I am not sure whether I want to change my career, but if I do, I can just quit my job and apply for summer intern after my second year. As always, rewards and risk are always tied together.

You may want to check with that top20 school in your town, if it is like NYU which won't even let you do on-campus interview, you may as well as forget it, because there is no way you can change your career path.

as of Haas, they have the smallest full-time class size among top20 schools, plus all the resources are avaliable to part-time students. That makes my decision much easier.

The total cost of Haas PT MBA is about 75K for three years. I guess it is a bargin that is hard to find.

funnytiger,

Congratulations to you from Redwood City in Silicon Valley. I am thinking of getting a part-time MBA at Berkeley, but its ranking is a little low. Do you think it will really help you to land a prestige job either in the US or in China?

作者: funnytiger    时间: 2003-10-29 06:07
bo_dong, you must dig it really deep to get this old post.

well, if you are in silicon valley and don't want to give up for your job, well, Haas is the only choice. N0.13 on BW and No.7 on USNEWS maybe a little bit too low for you, but to me, they are high enough.

What is indeed the "pretige job" you mentioned? if you are talking about top tier Ventual Captial, you are right, Harvard and Stanford are the only schools they recruite.

josh_han

the process time is really long, they follow their schedule which is posted online, usually they will interview you within a month after the deadline and will notify you at the time they post on the internet.

for chinese people in Silicon Valley, we are facing the same problem - Similar Background
everyone is an engineer. In your essay, you'd better have something that can draw special attention.

they have increased the class size, I would say you have a very good chance. please note, if your GMAT is under 680, well, you may want to put extra effort in your essay.
