We heavily dissaude candidates from applying R3 due to the much lower probabiliy of acceptance vs. R1 or R2. Waiting until next year will allow you to really put your best foot forward on your applications and enable you to apply when your chances of acceptance are highest - R1 and early decision progams. It's not too early to start thinking about what your strategy will be for R1 - what schools you will target, what you will write about in your essays, how you plan on strategically positioning yourself in your application. You are coming from a very overrepresented demographic, so you want to put your best self on display given the competition.
