不明白d 错在哪里了 求大神指教

题干是biggest daily newspapers作主语，比较双方是其（同样的一个东西circulation）在两个不同时间段的高低，所以是in和in平行，强调比较时间段，如果是D的话错在比较了两个circulation本身，而不怎么强调两个时间，此外我觉得结构也有问题，若要用D也应该是：In the six months from October 1995 through March 1996, most of the county’s biggest daily newspapers had circulation lower than that in a similar period a year earlier.

这个题众说纷纭，怎么回答的都有，我个人是这么理解的
首先你选D认为的应该是that指代的circulation，这个circulation存在着一定的问题，这是谁的circulation？题干给出的是 Most of the county’s biggest dailynewspapers had lower circulation，而后面指代的circulation可以指的是任何一个circulation，存在指代歧义问题。所以指代circulation一定是错的，要指代也得指代circulation of most of the county’s biggest dailynewspapers

可以这么说，D的that可以指代circulation in the six months from October 1995 through March 1996这个整体，这是错的，要用that的话我觉得就要像我上面说的那样调整一下结构，不然会引起歧义

本题我做的时候也错选了D，我的思路是that指代newspaper。
仔细一想，这才是不能选DE的原因。句子主干有两个名词：newspaper和circulation，当我们选择一个含有that的选项时，that所指为何肯定是会造成歧义的。
因此排除DE。

去年我也一直被这个题目搞死了，还查比较的各种类型，比名词比动词啥的。。。。我觉得这个思路完全就是混乱不堪的。
后来细细搜集了Ron关于比较和比较中省略的帖子，我觉得他说的非常对，比较完全没有必要看是否省略，你只需要看比较词（比如than）后面的部分，前面有没有就行了，那么这一题中in a similar period / that in a similar period 都是说的通的，than前面都有可以对应和比较的对象，那么自然而然的在语法上是都可以的，但是为什么选C，很简单，C比D简洁。C和D传递了同样的意思，但是C更简洁，所以选C
