OG17 87题的run-on现象？

对于D、E选项，OG的解释都有"requires the omission of the comma after communication" ，有的解释是会造成run-on
这里的run-on是怎么造成的？communication后面有逗号为什么不对？

还有B选项中not是否定“a direct rendering of speech”的，所以这时not...but...为短语结构，应前后平行，但but后的动词began在not后并没有相应的动词啊

还是先看句意吧，这个句子说的是：最早期的写作不是对演讲词的直接修改（渲染），而是一种不同的沟通表达，后面才和口头表达结合。（注意，作者要表达的是写作和口头表达的关系，因为演讲是典型的口头表达）。弄明白了句意，你再看D，这里it有指代不明的问题，就算it指代的是writing，但应该是主动语态而不是被动；E，假设it没有指代问题，在语法上，不需要逗号，and连接两个句子即可。但是即使这样语法正确，E不用began的表达依然抹杀了时序的先后.另外，这里not....but，不是并列关系， not是对系动词的否定的一个副词，but是连词，是对一个转折事实的说明。

那请问怎样判断not...but...是否为并列关系呢？

我敢肯定，当你弄明白了句意，你绝对不会再问这个问题。

这道题3个考点：

1/ be likely to do
2/ more than 出现比较级 more 那么它的好基友than 就要出现
3/ was not..., but (was)....., and (was) 隐藏考点

所以根据考点1 就可以把CD 舍去了
所以根据考点2 就可以把AE 舍去了

剩下就只有B了

语法点固然重要，楼上说的句意也很重要。楼主把句子的主干抓出来：
the earliest writing was not a direct rendering of speech, but...a seperate and distinct symbolic system of communication, and.....

这个就是隐藏考点3，所以更加证明B是对的
was not...,but (was more than likely to do...)..., and (was) merged with spoken language.

还有如果GMAT允许“not noun, but be ”结构的话
The hall was set up not by him, but was set up by his father.这句话对吗

是否正确要看 but 之后如果省略助动词是否会引起歧义。

比如下面我要举出的例子就是不能省略助动词部分否则就会有歧义的：

Sunspots, vortices of gas associated with strong electromagnetic activity, are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun but have never been sighted on the Sun’s poles or equator.
