大全975 (天山20) – 答案没有争议吗? that…but which ??

要请各位帮忙，我看过SC大全注释和版上讨论，大家都认为是 that ….but which 平衡修饰 a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose。因此答案(C)

但我的疑点是如果是平衡为什么不直接用that ….but that 呢?

且which通常的修饰名词都是越接近越好，因此，我会不倾向修饰选择这个表达方式。

因此，我会想选(D)

it = religious zeal ;  them= a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose

religious zeal事实上是a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose的自然产物(a natural outgrowth)。
当然句意上，我不确定是否正确(不晓得Puritan fanatics在美国社会的形象)

还是从句意上面理解我觉得比较合适, 可以在体会一下.

另外, 也可以从倒装的原理判断. 这里有一个倒装的结构Bring to A B, 原来的结构应该是Bring B to A, 但是由于B包含了一个很长的定语从句, 造成头重脚轻, 所以倒装.
