这道题我认为考点并不在于破折号。。。。首先，我看到这道题时
1.比较对象问题：比较对象是people不能够用less than来形容，所以，AC很快就可以被排除。
2.number也不应该用lower这样的词来形容，而是应该用large这样的词汇形容。排出了D
3.BE相比
B选项是比较结构的省略。
only seven people this century have been killed by the great white shark, the man-eater of the movies—fewer than have been killed by bee stings.
实际上应该是
only seven people this century have been killed by the great white shark, the man-eater of the movies—fewer than people have been killed by bee stings.
省略了主语people 因为前面不远处就已经存在比较对象，没有必要重复，所以这样省略是可以的。
即：More...than...结构中，than后分句省略主语。
E选项：, ，之间是同位语的结构。但是这里是解释说明的作用，也就是lz所问的破折号的作用。
但是同位语是结构相同可以相互替换，并不是补充解释说明的含义。
需要具体的理解。
