OG-12-30,同一道题在og10th里面的讲法居然不一样..求助!!

For members of the seventeenth-century Ashanti nation in Africa, animal-hide shields with wooden frames were essential items of military equipment, a method to protect warriors against enemy arrows and spears.

(A) a method to protect

(B) as a method protecting

(C) protecting

(D) as a protection of

(E) to protect
OG 12: the underlined part begins a phrase describing items of military equipment

OG 10: C is best because the participle protecting begins a phrase that explains what the shields did

一个认为是修饰 shields ，一个认为修饰items of military equipment。

到底哪个是正确的??

其实是一样的。前面是主系表结构，后面的现在分词短语作adj.修饰的是前面整个事物。
而animal-hide shields with wooden frames = essential items of military equipment，所以"描述shields" 、"解释items" 哪个说法都是一样的。

无论如何后面的修饰成分都要有个确定对象吧..?
如果不是主系表结构的话..protecting又修饰哪个呢..?

同意2楼说法
现在分词表伴随，表功能，不是简单修饰某个词
这么理解吧，和前面整句话并列做伴随，唯一注意的是动作发出者是前面的主语
