为什么后面还要补出are呢？

are not the products...but by-products不是挺平衡的吗？

根据PREP里对not but平行的看法，be not和but be也构成平行。

如果不加ARE，不能明确表明是和products of natural selection在比较，而是可能做介词表示“除了”，造成due to they enhance reproduction or survival, but simply random by products。。。的歧义
