我的理解是
in mining 和 to produce 平行。
如果你认为miing和producing平行的话
把并列的句子分开来看，就会变成，
succeeded for the first time in mining heat from theEarth's interior
and
succeeded for the first time in producing energy on a commercial scale
意思就变了
原来要表达的是第一次成功开发地热并商业化的发电
但是如果并列的话，第一次开发地热，且第一次商业化发电（是使用地热的，以前所有发的电都不是商业化的）
