答案是E 但是lz选的D 因为之前考虑到but是连词因此CE 错误因为后面是不完整的句子结构可是答案是E 请问大神为什么啊，小女子卡住了求助求助！

but 可以作副词吧，I don't think we will manage it. Still we can but try.牛津上的句子

A. which other Scandinavian kings attempted to repeat, unsuccessfully, later in the same century (which错误修饰Enlish kingdom)
B. which other Scandinavian kings attempted to repeat later that same century, but not successfully (which错误修饰Enlish kingdom)
C. an achievement that other Scandinavian kings attempted later in the century to repeat, but were not successful at it (but连接完整句无主语)
D. an achievement attempted later in the century by other Scandinavian kings that was not successful (attemped later .... 修饰achievement导致后面的that修饰对象模糊，不知道that修饰achievement, century, 还是kings)
E. an achievement that other Scandinavian kings attempted to repeat later in the century, but without success (正确)

句子结构：The assault culminated in eleventh century with conquest, an achievement that other kings attempted to repeat, but without success.

D中that与先行词an achievement离得太远，没有遵循touch原则。此外被动没有必要。
E中but作为副词使用。but除了作连词之外，也可以作介词和副词。

D这里不仅仅是that指代other kings的指代歧义这么简单哦
有人会认为 attempted later in the century by other kings 可以当作名词性修饰语，that跳过修饰语修饰an achievement这样也说得通丫，但是你再看清楚一下，原题的success修饰的是repeat the achievement，而不是修饰achievement，而D选项repeat都不见了，等于说那个不成功是指这个achievement的不成功，而不是后人去repeat不成功，整个改变了原来的意思~~~~
