求助对prep08笔记中188题解释的疑惑~~

188题中的解释中有给出一道类似的题目
For members of the seventeenth-century Ashanti nation in Africa, animal-hide shields with wooden frames were essential items of military equipment, a method to protect warriors against enemy arrows and spears.
A. a method to protect
B. as a method protecting
C. protecting
D. as a protection of
E. to protect

我想问一下Ron不是说comma+ving应该满足两种关系

1) it should apply most nearly to the subject of the preceding clause (as you've said); and, even more importantly,
2) it should have one of the following RELATIONSHIPS to that clause:
* immediate consequence
* simultaneous, but lower-priority, action

Ron还说：comma + ING modifies the preceding clause, if it's actually preceded by a clause.
这里的prospecting要怎么理解呢？我觉得既不是1也不是2啊。
求NN们帮助！

A. a method 如果想同位的话，就得在前面的Clause里面找，但是前面没有能和method对应的东西。不可能说equipment是method也不能说items是method。所以杀。
B. as犯了和A近似的问题。method还是没有指代。
C. RON说的那个问题感觉大部分是用于主谓宾的情况，这里则是明显的主系表，were做linking verb。were前后的东西是同一种类型的东西。所以protecting在这里就可以想成是功能。
D. 错误同A。没指代
E. to protect。。to do这个一般表示目的。但是原文读不出目的的意思。所以还是选 Protecting表示功能吧~
