这题中的known to Homer's heroes，到底什么意思？ 是“' 荷马' 里的英雄们所知道的城市” 吗？ 但是逻辑上不太通嘛。 btw, "homer" 是“荷马”的意思吗，是那个“荷马史诗”吗？在下不才，惭愧！

我觉得是。就是说他发现了一个文明，比荷马的英雄们所知的城市（作为文明的代表）更老1000年。以下搜索到以前的讨论：

C错，因为它将a civilization与一个句子比较

1, Ancient -- something old but disappeared, belonging to a time long ago in HISTORY, especially thousands of years ago

2, Old -- something that is old has existed or been used for a long time

obviously, the city doesn't exist any more.

3, The ommission of  'was' -- as long as there is not ambiguity.
记得SBBI兄发帖子讨论过这个题目：问B如果改为more ancient than was the city known to Homer’s heroes

    大家的讨论结果是不可以，说比较对象是a civilization 和the city （那个帖子没找到，只好在这里发，请大家见量）

   我刚才做题目，有了点新的看法，请大家指正：

   我觉得这里比较的还是句子，所以加was单纯从语法上看可以接受，但是表达的很不舒服：

    首先这个句子应该补全：uncovered a civilization （that was) a thousand years more ancient than...

    因此，这里的比较其实是在一个从句里的比较

    比较的两句话是：a civilization was ancient(1000 years more)

                                the city was ancient

      按照这个看法，补出was可以接受，但是如果补出来，整个句子会造成一种看似的比较不平行（a civilization 和句子）

       语法上was也可省略，省略后，这个句子就很顺畅！！

比较状语从句中的省略
在以than或as引导的比较状语从句中，如果主语与主句的主语一致，则从句主语与谓语（可以是be动词，也可以是行为动词）均可省略；如果从句的主语和主句的主语不一致，则省略其谓语及与主句相同的部分。如：

生产比以前增加得快多了。
Jane can speak Spanish more fluently than Peter (can speak).
珍妮讲西班牙语比彼得讲得流利。

在口语中，than和as及其后的部分可以省略。
