E.    Moving into the first rank of Americannewspapers only after Katharine Graham's becoming its publisher in 1963, TheWashington Post won high praise under her command

In E ,"after Katharine Graham's becoming its publisher"  is wordy and unclear.
Moreover, the original sentence of A puts emphasize on the fact that KG became the publisher, and then the latter things happened. The choice of E changes the original meaning.

Moving into the first rank of American newspapers only after Katharine Graham's becoming its publisher in 1963, The Washington Post won high praise under her command为什么不对呢?

Moving into the first rank of American newspapers only after Katharine Graham's becoming its publish ...

第一, ”Katharine Graham's becoming its publisher“ 是一个名词结构想表达一个完整句子(主系表结构)的意思,不如原句中完整句子的表达好;
