求救OG26题!

这道题应该有人问过了,但是有一点论坛上好像没有讨论过...
就是这个句子到底是强调write呢还是强调outnumber?感觉两个都是可以的。之前刷OG的时候自己总结的规律是如果两个都可以,那就遵从原句意思,这道题A选项没有语法错误,没想到这个规律还是错了...求N人解释...谢谢!

years before Susan's marriage to Emily's brother and
ending shortly before Emily's death in 1886,
outnumbering her letters to anyone else.

I'm going to repost Ron's explanation as to why A is not correct:

"the phrase in question, "outnumbering ...", is NOT, in any way whatsoever, a "(direct/indirect) result" of the time period over which the letters were written. these are tw completely independent and unrelated observations about the letters, and so they can't be placed into the sort of construction that appears in choice (a). this is thus not a grammatical problem so much as a problem of clarity, but it's still a problem.

examples:
my brother, who ate bagel bites for breakfast every single day of his high school career, graduated in 1994. --> correct; his eating bagel bites had no impact on his graduation date.
my brother ate bagel bites for breakfast every single day of his high school career, graduating in 1994. --> incorrect; these are two unrelated observations, but this construction erroneously implies some sort of relationship."

感谢nn的解释!我刚刚看了一些v-ing用法的总结,其中说到SVO,Ving结构里动名词修饰的是动词,那结合Ron的解释,就是说这个动名词结构必须和主句谓语是相关的,否则就会nonsense。我这样理解对么?

根据主谓和平行，B,C,D排除掉没有问题；对比A和E就要看哪个句子的表达更Concise了，然我我是这么看的：
A. Letters were written..., outnumbering...
outnumbering 如果作为分词结构表伴随的话，那么outnumbering应该是这个were written这个动作的结果！而细读句子，written during certain period很显然不能够导致数量上的outnumber,那么很明显这样的一种结构的使用是错误的！
举个例子，As a result of China's easing of travel restrictions, the number of mainland tourists to the territory has surged from 4.5 million in 2001 to 22.5 million in 2010, outnumbering visitors from all other countries combined.
在这里用outnumbering可以，因为outnumbering之前的主句提到了大陆游客数量的激增，这个事件伴随的后果就是outnumbering其它国家旅游人数的总和。
而你绝对不能说，Chinese mainland tourists are rich and willing to purchase a lot of luxurious brands, outnumbering vistors from all other countries combined. 因为中国人富有和中国旅游人数多在逻辑上没有关系。
再极端一点： She is happy, tired of doing anything. 这句话明显不合理：她开心和她不想做事情在逻辑上没有关系！
E. Letters, (written...), outnumber...相比之下，E的表达就合理多了。

总结一下：
1. 做GMAT时用语法排除到只剩两个选项时，那么就是细细体会比较语义合理性的时候了。
2. 使用分词结构表伴随的句子结构时一定要注意，分词结构与主句中的语义要在逻辑上有联系！（试问，两个逻辑上毫不相干的成分怎么能够“伴随呢”？！）

起码OG上没有提到有语法错误，只是说比较wordy~那么语法错在哪里呢

LZ这个题目非常好，可以把它记下来。考了advanced parallelism 和modifier。

我的结题过程：

对于长句题目，先找主谓宾，
主谓宾是letters were written ..., outnumbering..
但是outnumbering做伴随状语，感觉很不好。为什么？因为
伴随状语是指状语从句的动作伴随主句发生，它的特点是：它所表达的动作或状态是伴随着句子谓语动词的动作而发生或存在的。
也就是outnumbering其实不能伴随were written发生，
所以A错误。
接下来看B。
发现that begins ... and ended 时态不一致，干掉。
再看C。
beginning和that ends不对称，干掉。
再看D。
outnumbering修辞了period，不对，干掉
再看E。
没有发现错误。
