选A，但是我觉得吧，A中 on the surface of the sun放在dark spots后面有作定语的嫌疑修饰 dark spots 啊，而整句句子中，我觉得是做状语的。从后半句的on the sun's poles and equator看得出来。

那A选项是不是就产生歧义了呢！！？

1）句子结构：Sunspots... are visible...but have never been sighted...
2）as darkspots on the surface of the Sun; on the Sun's poles or equator.那么这两个应该是并列的
3）但是在这的时候，根据你说的是状语的话，我在想是否省略了2）的第二部分as darkspots呢？

被你这样一说我还真的迷糊了。
但觉得或许可以这样想：
1）如果认为两个on是在平行的句子中承担同样的成分，那就没有意义了
2）好像无论是定语还是状语对意义的改变不大
3）没有更好的答案了
