红字部分og的解释我不理解，为什么had been earning会有产生读者已经知道了的效果呢？

1.what she ten earned 跟大象earn 是同一时期的比较不存在谁先谁谁后的问题。
2.红体部分我是这么理解的.用have been doing 强调了大象已经能和Barbara Wootton能够挣一样多，强调数量上相同,on the premise that the elephant can earn.而原句更多表现对大象能够挣钱并且跟Barbara Wootton 挣的一样多感到“惊奇”。

C选项看见there was 就封杀它。D的话 and 前后没法对比。E 中 elephant被后面一大串修饰完就突然没有谓语宾语后面竟然用and 又连接一句子。所以错了。
