选E,我一开始把这个排除了，因为逗号＋and不是会造成和主句 a recent平行的歧义吗？

我是这样选的
首先排除AB，their 指代不清
C making尚可，但是and后不是很平行，先放着
D和E相比 and 明显比to好，舍D取E
最后CE相比，by... and by...明显的平行且their 因为前面有了by 而且those of other college...中心语是those，their不存在指代混淆，故最后选E
楼主可能想多了，因为后面有破折号而且and前后都有by,如果不加By的话对的是会有平行歧义，但是加了以后就是与前面by引导的介词短语平行，and之前加不加逗号问题不是很大
