一题求教 <-- prep2-185(edited by AlienX)

When drive-ins were at the height of their popularity in the late 1950's, some 4,000 existed in the United States, but today there are less than one-quarter that many.

B. there are fewer than one-quarter as many

C. there are fewer than one-quarter of that amount

D. the number is less than one-quarter the amount

E. it is less than one-quarter of that amount

答案是C。

我选了B。虽然觉得B中的as many怪怪的。

但the amount可以用在这里吗?amount不是多用于不可数名词的量吗?请指正。谢谢先了.

查了longman,

However, people often use amount with plural countable nouns when what they are talking about is thought of as a group: We didn't expect such a large amount of people. | an enormous amount of problems

这个能作为这题选C的理由吗?请指教。

as many (as existed in the late 1950's).

偶觉得B的一个问题是一方面说fewer than one quarter, 一方面又说as many

想到一点, 可以说twice as many/much as, 但是可以说fewer than twice as many/much as么?

大家多多讨论吧

tianwan,我不觉得as many (as existed...) 的括号部分可省略. 省略的原则是什么呢?有见过这样的例子吗?

谢谢先了.
