Essay 1: Age to Get Driver License, 16 or 18?

How old can a person get the driver license? Many people argue that the driver licenses shall be only issued to the persons above 18 years old because it is much safer for them to drive the cars. However some people think that as long as the persons have reached 16 years old, they are eligible to get the driver licenses because they are mature enough to understand the traffic rules and drive cars. In my point of view, if the person is above 16 years old and is able to pass the driving test, he can get the driver license. The reasons are set forth below:

First, it is important to get a driver license in the USA. Sometimes a driver license is just like your identification card in America. When you go to a bank to apply for credit card, the bank may require you to provide them with your driver license as a supporting document. When you are looking for a job, the employer might ask you such questions “Do you have driver license? ” or “Can you drive?”. In such cases, having driver license is also one prerequisite to get a new job. Even when you apply for some membership cards of some shopping malls or supermarkets, the diver license will be helpful in obtaining such membership cards.

Second, with a driver license, you will have more fun and convenience in your life in the USA. I have been told by some American that without a car, it is just like that you do not have “feet”. With a car, you can drive to whatever places that you would like to go. As we all know, the youth enjoy hanging out with friends or going on a trip or organizing a journey to explore the mysterious places. In most time, they will drive there since such places are not near from their houses. Thus, they can have more fun in life if they can drive cars. Further, the younger go to high school every day. Some students are living far away from school. How to solve this problem? Some might take a bus to go to school every day. Some choose to live on campus or lease an apartment near the school. However, with a driver license, they can drive to school by themselves. It will be more convenient for them to drive to school rather than take a bus to school or live on campus.

Third, a person above 16 years old have enough judgment in driving a car. Most people have such concern that the person who is below 18 years old fails to drive well and there might be more traffic accidents. However, it is not the case. Age is not equivalent to the safety of driving. Even a person is above 18 years old, it is possible that he has traffic accidents in driving a car. Generally speaking, a person above 16 years old is able to make good judgment when he is driving. If he is well educated in the driving courses, he will know about the basic rules of driving in the USA, for instance, to stop at the stop sign, to yield to other cars with the yield sign, to turn around the head when he is getting a turn to left or right and so on.

Fourth, if the persons over 16 years old can get driver licenses, it is good for the distributors and manufacturers of cars because they have more target clients. In generally, the younger the clients are, the more fashions they will pursue. The young generation like something new and fashionable, for instance, ipod nano, iphone, latest model personal computers, PDA, Hifi and some cool cars. This is the characteristic of the youth and they might become the potential consumers of the new model cars. Thus, if the person under 18 years old can get a driver license, more cars will be designed and manufactured for such young guys. Thus it will become a great incentive to the manufacturers and distributors of the cars and the car market will be more prosperous.

In summary, in my view, the person who is over 16 years old is eligible to get drive license in the USA because they have such capacity to drive well and the driver license is essential to the life in the USA. Meanwhile, the lower of the age standard to get a driver license will create more opportunities for the car manufacturers and distributors to gain profits from the new target clients.

Eassy 2: Semesters or Quarters, which are better?

Many people argue that semesters may well be better because semesters point to the opportunity for greater depth and longer review of courses. Under quarters, there is no time to focus adequately both on the materials and issues being covered and on the researches or writing. The quarter system does not allow enough time for students to consult adequately with faculty, or to do thorough researches to arrive at a satisfying conclusion. Meanwhile, a lot of people argue that quarters are superior to semesters.

In my point of view, I prefer quarters to semesters. I have set out the reasons as follows:

First, students will have a greater diversity of subjects by taking one-third more courses under quarters. Universities and colleges provide students with the basic education and skills which may be benefit for their future jobs after graduation. Quarter system can maximize the use of college facilities in a time of enrollment growth, as it allows for four regular periods of academic instruction. Further, quarter system allows students to enroll in a richer variety of courses and school-coordinated internships and may encourage students to take on double majors. Thus, quarter system helps the students to learn as much knowledge as they can during the study life in their universities and colleges.

Second, quarters are helpful in coordinating prerequisites. As we all know, the most difference between quarters and semesters is in coordinating prerequisites for a major with courses from other departments. Under quarters, the students are able to take some foundation courses and then select upper level courses step by step. However under a semester system, some prerequisites, for instance, math, physics and chemistry may delay the entry into many degree programs.

Third, quarter system is an effective structure to support both teaching and research. Many faculties view the quarter system ideal for teaching and research. On one hand, quarters allow for faculty to engage in terms with a relatively light course load of teaching and greater opportunities for short sabbaticals. Under quarters, it is convenient for faculty to schedule sabbatical leaves and to complete researches as scheduled. In the light teaching quarters, the faculty can catch up on doing researches and drafting reports. On the other hand, for graduate students, quarters provide more flexibility for them to arrange the class schedule. Sometime, they can take quarter break to pursue jobs or internships or to conduct research in the 3-month terms without interruption. Therefore, under quarters, faculty and graduate students might have greater success in studies and researches or gaining entrance into top jobs.

To sum up, I prefer quarters to semesters because quarter system has great benefits for students since it enable them for a greater diversity of subjects. Moreover, quarter system also improves the education and research of the universities and colleges.
