此题正确答案：A
我的疑问是：此题B选项过去完成进行时有错吗。。。因为后面提到“she then..."，说明大象赚钱在她之前，那么就是过去的过去，然后再加一个正在赚钱的意思，为啥不可以呢。。。

1. 从语义的角度来看，简洁后的内容是－> the elephant was earning annually exactly what she then earned：大象当时赚的钱是就是她过后赚的钱，就是说这两个赚的钱数相等。用过去时描述了一种过去普遍的一种状态，用过去完成进行时，持续到某一时间点然后一直进行着的时态，还没有完成，也就是说得有个时间点来体现出来这种语义。

2. 而且B中还有个问题，that the elephant, -ing 和 A中that引导的定语从句之间的区别。
以下的内容引自毕出《GMAT句子改错语法推理精讲》2014年9月第1版，机械工业出版社
第20页“定语，其功能是修饰或限定句中的某一个名词。”
第24页，－ing“伴随的含义是：‘一个主语发出两个动作或一个主语处于两种状态，或一个主语发出一个动作时又伴随有某一种状态。伴随状语的逻辑主语必须是主句的主语，伴随状语与谓语动作所表示的动作或状态是同时发生的。’伴随状语可以和主句具有同时发生、因果、同种状态等关系“

根据上面的叙述，有以下几点浅见：
（1）主句主语是：The British sociologist and activist Barbara Wootton，显然不是这个主语发出giving rides这个动作。
（2）即便是考虑到是that引导从句中的主语elephant发出的giving rides这个动作，但也会造成，修饰主句主语The British sociologist and activist Barbara Wootton 的歧义。
