因为按照出题的思路说要求句子精简表达出意思

如果是C的话,那样就会出现on earth究竟是修饰谁的问题了

同时 后面as seen我觉得应该是跟在rate后面的

刚刚才好像想明白了。从句意来看"as seen in the rings visible in the cross sections of their trunks"应该指的是"the rate at which trees grow"（年轮代表树的生长速度），因此排除C。A和B中又因为主谓不一致排除掉，D没有谓语。只有E对了。

非常同意，由于介词短语不做主语，所以肯定存在倒装，所以发现主语是单数，ab都错了c中，among...on earth,on earth只有在among之后才能表达among的范围。
