可以试试排除法:

A,B: "avoiding, avoidance"显然不如动词"avoided"用法好. 在GMAT中单词如果有动词表达法尽量用动词表达,而不要使用名词形式

C: "in that"和"because"是同一个意思,但在GMAT中"in that"是十分过时的一种表达方式,所以一般"in that"是错误选项标志

D:while 表示前后两句话的动作同时发生,但从本句中,使用因果关系的连词更符合逻辑一些

在网上搜索到了"if only"和"only if"的区别:

only if表示"只有"；if only则表示"如果……就好了"。If only也可用于陈述语气。
　　I wake up only if the alarm clock rings. 只有闹钟响了，我才会醒。
　　If only the alarm clock had rung.　　　当时闹钟响了，就好了。
　　If only he comes early.　　　　　　　但愿他早点回来。
