在OG 114中 114. From the bark of the paper birch tree the Menomini crafted a canoe about twenty feet long and two feet wide, with small ribs and rails of cedar, which could carry four persons or eight hundred pounds of baggage so light that a person could easily portage it around impeding rapids. E.baggage yet was so lightChoice
E, the best answer, states that although the canoe could transport cargo of considerable weight, it was light: a canoe . . . which could carry . . . yet was . . . light.... Here, the conjunction yet is appropriately and correctly used to link two verb phrases. 这里YET引导的不是句子,是两个动作,是吗?
在OG184中 184. As measured by the Commerce Department, corporate profits peaked in the fourth quarter of 1988 and have slipped since then, as many companies have been unable to pass on higher costs. E yet are slipping since then, because many companies were unable to pass on higher costs
In E, yet also requires a comma before it, 这里YET引导的是什么?句子?是否也可以理解成同主语下的谓语并列呢?
(1) OG114. canoe ... which carry 4 persons or 800 baggages yet(=but) was so light that...
(2) OG184. 没有感觉到yet前面需要加",", 但是觉得since than 表示yet have slipped since then 较好。
Yet的其他用法,自己平时的总结,仅供参考:
(1):表示:up to present, up to now, so far. 例:...though no such weapons have yet been found by advancing coalition troops. 或者as yet。或者:these measures are not yet opportune (2)表示:eventually. 例如:The foreign minister of Iran also aimed threatening words at the United States, warning Sunday that "the worst days are yet to come" in Iraq (3)表示:besides, in addition to: 例如:American steel companies are undergoing yet another wave of mergers and shutdowns。 (4):表示:but.例如:a statement that is seemingly contradictory to the commen sense and yet is prehaps true。
In my opinion, YET is conj. means" and despite it; nevertheless" can used to connect two clauses. For example, She said she would be late, yet she arrived on time.
I seldom notice such usages as OG114. May be it is a special usage. For me, just remember it.
OG184, e has so many obvious errors. ETS also require that yet need a clause.
good question! in OG184, I think E are diffrent from D which requires a comma since D is a sperate clause. But for E, i do not think comma is required.
mzyzhu. do you think it is correct to say "Although....., yet....."? thanks!
