The pearl river delta is known for the frequency of strikes, but in most cases they were resolved quickly. However, the strike by workers in Yue Yuen, a Taiwan company is said to be the largest and longest one.
The government has blackout the report, in contrast with what they did in a case regarding a Japanese company in 2010. At that time, the government encourage the press to broadcast the strike in order to give the Japanese company more pressure. This time, workers participated in strikes because their due pensions have long been insufficently paid by the Yue Yuen, and the government is also to blame for the company's lax application of social-security law. Some accused the government of its corruption.
Many workers are not striking explicitly now; instead, they protest by means of refusing to work.
Although the company has announced that it will compensate the workers' pension, and the labor union has tried to mediating the dispute, the workers are still very angry, because most the attempts merely focus on persuading them to go back to work. The workers refused to accept those offers, and pointed out that union labor only represents the interest of government.
Most workers in this strike are young. Because the company, faced with serious shortage of young labor, tends to employ the workers for longer and longer time, those young workers become aware of the importance of their pension.
Now more and more labor-intensive production has move to countries with cheaper labor force, such as Vietnam. |
