Large quantities of undergraduates, with the freedom to choose their personal courses currently, are inclined to the most difficult and challenging ones even if it means a lower grade. Taking the importance of grade and other factors into account, I deem it unnecessary to do so.
First and foremost, courses, being obscure and abstract, are not always of use in one’s later life. Tempting might it be to take a course that is hard for most students and exhibit one’s outstanding study ability, it is not advisable to take a course that is not suitable for oneself. Seeing whether it is relevant to one’s major might be the best and most convenient approach, as one is more than likely to embark on something related to his/her major in the future. Take the course of programme as an example. For students who are about to become programmers or game designers, this course would be a useful class though it is generally a tough task. Nevertheless, there is no need for art students to elect this challenging class.
Another argument has to do with my position is that difficult and challenging courses may fail to rouse student’s interest of study. As it is uneasy to master a course that one has no interest in, it stands a good chance that he/she is to quit halfway. There is an instance involving the course of mathematical modeling. It is such a demanding course that one must be equipped with the knowledge of advanced mathematics, algebra, calculus, statistics, and the list will go on. Once a person is involved in this class, he/she is soon to grasp the main points and expand his/her mind. But if on the opposite occasion, it is not a pleasant experience for one to undergo. As such, I posit that it is no better to take the most difficult classes.
Last but not the least, course, either difficult or challenging, sometimes incurs a lower grade which is progressively gaining its importance in life. A decent resume, in most cases, is the threshold to a job opportunity. Then what kind of resume is preferred? Though there are competences like social skills employers looking for, applicants with good grades are of prior consideration to those who are equally excellent in other aspects. Taking a challenging course but failing to get a fair score or even flunking is a business never worthy of doing.
On balance, I hold the viewpoint that it is unnecessary to take the most difficult and challenging courses.
