标题: Admission from Columbia - Accounting PhD

I was rejected by University of Chicago this morning, but got admission from Columbia in the afternoon. Columbia made three offers out of 70 applicants. My background: GMAT: 770, two years of work experience in the US with a big financial institution in the area of accounting and reporting, master's degree from a US university, good English writing skills, and oral English(but they probably did not care, since they did not interview me at all, not even a phone call).

Both the rejection and admission were by emails. Cornell will update admission decisions online next Monday, 28th, so check your application status by then. UT-Austin is still interviewing, and has made one offer so far. No further information from other schools. I guess I can give my offer from University of Florida back, and maybe one of you can get it.

cong first! since u have ufl's offer too, i would like to comment a little bit. if you would like to do financial accounting, empirical reserach, columbia for sure. but if you would like to do analytical accounting reserach, ufl is one of the best places, not in terms of school as a whole, but there are a couple of professors that are really strong in this filed, you can check their placement record. but what i am talking here is all from academic prospective. if you consider other issures, columbia is definetely supreme.

aista, I guess you are in the US, and either already in a PhD Program or did a lot of research and are applying for one. You are absolutely right on this. UFL is very good at theoretical research, and one chinese girl graduated last year from UFL actually got a very nice placement - Carnegie Mellon, because CMU's strenghth is also in theoretical staff. But I am interested in financial accounting and empirical analysis of capital markets, two more senior professors in empirical analysis are leaving UFL, making it less attractive, so I would go for Columbia. I also interviewed with Wisconsin-Madison last Friday. They told me the feedback from professors were positive, but they could not make any further offers until the end of this month. By now, Wisconsin should have completed all the interviews, so if you have not heard anything from it, you can start focusing on other schools. Cornell will make final decisions next Monday. I am on the second-round interview list of UT-Austin, which will take three students this year and has made one offer so far. So you still have a chance there. UCLA is kinda of slow. Have not heard anything from Rochester, but that is a good school for accounting.

dear apple01, thank you for the info. i am acually intersted in theoretical staff. that's why i want to make some point among all the congs cmu did give me an offer(conditional on my going) and i am admitted to columbia too. ucla did call but they are waiting for graduate school for giving admission. i am not applying for austin, wisconsin, so i don't know their progress. what other school are you applying? in terms of financial accounting, capital market valuation, columbia is actually one of the best. michigan might be better but they (i think) are in the progress of interview now.

oh, i forgot rochester. i guess they are in review now coz i got an email a couple of weeks ago. they were dicreminating my gre computer test score. so i decided to ignor the school though i know it is good in accounting and my favorite journals are there....

I think Columbia will make only three offers. We've seen two here, not sure about the third one. But you still have a chance if you have not got the rejection letter yet - somebody might reject Columbia. Columbia clearly said on the offer letter that they would like to know earlier if we decide not to take it since there are many qualified people on the waiting list. Most likely I will take the offer due to geographic reasons, but you might beg aista MM. She might have something else in her mind.

My name is Qianyun. I have a campus interview for the PhD in Accounting program next week. Comparing with most of you, my background is not strong at all. I only got 660 on GMAT, and I am just graduating this May from my undergrad. (GPA 3.8, a U.S university, very small). The only work experience I had was 6 month at a Mid-size Corp, and 6 month at one of the Big 4. (I dont really have any full time experience). Considering all these factors, plus I am only 22 years old, I am not very confidence about getting in the PhD Program.
