Q29:

The emission of sulfur dioxide when high-sulfur coal is burned is restricted by law.  New

coal-burning plants usually comply with the law by installing expensive equipment to

filter sulfur dioxide from their emissions.  These new plants could save money by

installing instead less expensive cleaning equipment that chemically removes most sulfur

from coal before combustion.

Which of the following, if known, would be most relevant to evaluating the claim above

about how new coal-burning plants could save money?

A. Whether existing oil-burning plants are required to filter sulfur dioxide from their

emissions

B. Whether the expense of installing the cleaning equipment in a new plant is less

than the expense of installing the cleaning equipment in an older plant

C. Whether the process of cleaning the coal is more expensive than the process of

filtering the emissions

D. Whether lawful emissions of sulfur dioxide from coal-burning plants are

damaging the environment

E. Whether existing plants that use the filtering equipment could replace this

equipment with the cleaning equipment and still compete with new plants that

install the cleaning equipment

ans:B mine C?

i think C is the best answer

the passage told us that there are two methods to prevent the emission of sulfur dioxide and that to remove the pollution chemically is less expensive for new plants than to filter it.

we are asked to identify how new plants could save money

A 、B、D  and E are obviously irrelevant to the question

B. Whether the expense of installing the cleaning equipment in a new plant is less

than the expense of installing the cleaning equipment in an older plant

choose C.  it compared the expense of   process of cleaning the coal and  the process of

filtering the emissions , which are refered in the passage above.

why not choose "e"? I think "E" is the most suitable answer because it includes not only the cost but also something relevant to the whole competitive advantage.

请看c里的两个过程是怎么说的“the process of cleaning the coal" and "the process of filtering the emissions" coal 是煤,清除煤的过程?

A.existing oil-burning plants  无关

B.in an older plant

D.DAMAGING EVIRONMENT无关

E.同A.

本题背景信息:要减少the emission of sulfur dioxide,有两个措施filtering OR cleaning(意为清洗)。

题目问:most relevant to evaluating the claim above about how new-coal burning plants could save money(这题绝对没有将新plants与旧plants进行比较的意思,而是在argue如何如何才能让新plants省钱)

A 提到existing oil-burning plants,无关。

B 将a new plant与an older plant安装cleaning equipment的费用进行比较,无关。

小结:比较A、B两者的经济利益问题时,答案会围绕“钱”做文章,会涉及价格多/少、上升/下降;
