标题: 请问一道语法题
During the Renaissance, scholars were uncertain as to the location of Troy, and by the eighteenth century many historians doubted that Troy had ever existed.
(A) doubted that Troy had ever existed
(B) doubt that Troy has ever existed
(C) were in doubt as to the existence of Troy
(D) were doubtful concerning Troy’s existence
(E) had doubts about Troy’s ever existing
这里的A为什么是正确的呢？doubt陈述语序不是应该用whether么，that不是用在否定疑问语序的么？

这一题没做过，我的想法。
(A) doubted that Troy had ever existed
(B) doubt that Troy has ever existed (现在完成时不对)
(C) were in doubt as to the existence of Troy (我见过的所有in doubt的用法到了in doubt就结束了，后面不会再加解释成分as to什么的，连regarding都没见过；比如这一句如果说many historians were in doubt结束语法看起来是对的，但是意思变成historians本身是有问题的，而不是Troy是否存在有疑问；算改变句意吗？)
(D) were doubtful concerning Troy’s existence (我觉得doubtful后面加concerning是个错误用法，我查了一下doubtful有三种例句：一个是sb is doubtful for sth不太可能做什么；it's doubtful that；sth is doubtful有疑问)
(E) had doubts about Troy’s ever existing (我很确定has doubt about用法错，应该是has doubt that)

非常感谢！我也查了查资料，说that有时候可以用在doubt肯定句中，表示怀疑很大或者根本不相信
